The Death Of A Porn Star After Being Cyberbullied Because Of Her Homophobic Tweet

05/12/2017

An adult film star who starred in almost 290 hardcore movies, has died at the age of 23.

Her name was August Ames, a woman from Nova Scotia, Canada. She reportedly died in Camarillo, California. Her death was confirmed by the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Her husband, Kevin Moore, who expressed his sadness and asked for privacy.

He reportedly said that Ames "was the kindest person I ever knew and she meant the world to me. Please leave this as a private family matter in this difficult time."

Ames, whose real name was Mercedes Grabowski, had passed away, days after she came under heavy criticism for saying she refused to work with men who have also appeared in gay pornography, someone she described as a “crossover” performer.

August Ames.

Ames’ tweet was considered an offence by some people, since it suggested that males who do gay porn are more likely to have, and thus spread, sexually transmitted infections (STI) or diseases (STD).

This was the reason why she called the casual inclusion and hiring of these actors “BS.”

Ames was accused of homophobia on Twitter, but defended herself, saying she needed to have autonomy over her body.

After all, it has been publicly said that in the industry, whoever is penetrated, has the rights to call it a cut, and can get to choose whom they will perform with.

The control is not exclusive to the producer or the director.

“I don’t have anything to apologise for! Apologising for taking extra steps to ensue that my body stays safe? F*** you guys attacking me when none of my intentions were malicious. I f**king love the gay community! What the f*** ever! I CHOOSE who I have inside my body. No hate,” she tweeted.

Her last tweet was posted the next day, in which she said: "f*** y'all."

Ames took her own life shortly after the controversial tweet ignited backlash from both fans and followers, as well as others in the industry.

Ames' husband, Moore, is an adult film producer himself. And following his wife's death, he blamed cyberbullies for Ames' death.

As a matter of fact, Moore even named the people who had been particularly vicious on Twitter.

"I write this to make it crystal clear: bullying took her life. If the harassment had not occurred, she would be alive today," he wrote.

Moore insisted that Twitter killed his wife.

Ames isn't the first porn star to have committed suicide because of the industry.

So again, Ames' death delves into how women are treated in the adult industry, and what brings them into it in the first place.

Ames has amassed more than 270 film credits since 2013. What this means, she had only entered the industry for four years, and that she was already a nominee for Female Performer of the Year for the 2018 Adult Video News (AVN) awards, before she killed herself.

As a matter of fact, in 2015, Ames was already nominated for Best New Starlet by the AVN awards.

Ames is said to have committed suicide at her own home, in California, before she could even furnish it with a trophy. The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed she that her death was caused by asphyxiation via hanging.

The police said that there is no indication of foul play.

"She meant the world to me," said Moore in a statement.

Following Ames' death, fellow adult entertainers have expressed their sadness at the news of her death on social media.

From Abella Danger, Nikki Benz to Jules Jordan have all said their condolences.

Brazzers, a porn production based in Montreal in Canada, also paid tribute to her and chose to postpone a previously planned Ames scene.

“In light of today's tragic news Brazzers has decided to postpone the release of tonight's scheduled August Ames scene,” it said. "The scene will be posted at a more appropriate time, as we come to terms with this devastating loss. Thank you for your understanding."

Others who also mourned, described her as "kind" and "beautiful."
