Hollywood star Jim Carrey quits Facebook and dumping his stock, and he is also urging others to do the same as well.

"We must encourage more oversight by the owners of these social media platforms," said Carrey in a statement. "This easy access has to be more responsibly handled. What we need now are activist investors to send a message that responsible oversight is needed. What the world needs now is capitalism with a conscience."

Using the hashtag #unfriendfacebook", the comedian tweeted his disappointment because the company profited from Russian interference during the 2016 U.S. election by spreading fake news with Russian origins, and said that the company is still not doing enough to stop it.

Carrey who was the star of "Dumb and Dumber", "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" and “The Mask”, asked all "other investors who care about our future to do the same."

Facebook has previously admitted that the platform has been used by Russian-bought ads that were intended to sway the 2016 U.S. election. The company has also said that its algorithms had recommended contents created by Russian operatives.

Initially CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the idea of Facebook in having an impact on the elections was "crazy." But he later apologized for dismissing the real concerns.

"For a long time America enjoyed a geographical advantage in the world with oceans on both sides to protect it," Carrey said. "Now, social media has created cyber-bridges over which those who do not have our best interest in mind can cross and we are allowing it. No wall is going to protect us from that."
