Diana Prince is an Amazonian demigoddess.
And because of that, the Gods of Olympus has granted her godlike abilities, which include superhuman strength, nigh-invulnerability, speed, fast healing and semi-immortality.
Pair that with her training, she is also a masterful fighter in both armed and unarmed combat.
in the DC Extended Universe, Diana Prince is portrayed by Gal Gadot.
While the Wonder Woman film received high expectations from fans of both the fictional character and the Israeli actress, since the first trailer came out, people saw something that is quite odd.
And that is her perfectly hairless, but pale armpit.
In a shorter-than-one-second shot from the trailer, Diana Prince is seen lifting her arms over her head to hurl a vehicle, revealing her underarms, which are apparently hair-free.
The thing is, in the Wonder Woman film, Diana is a character who lived in the man-free paradise of Themyscira all her life, and that she goes on to save the world by defeating Ares, the God of War.
It's hard for people to imagine how Wonder Woman can have time for a waxing session in the middle of the World War I.
And because it's Hollywood, it's certain that the special effect department would also enhance Gal Gadot's armpits by digitally making them smoother, perhaps out of fear that moviegoers aren’t ready to see the creases of a woman’s unobscured armpit in close-up.
All of these makes Diana's perfectly hairless armpits seem unnatural, and that they don't fit well with the theme.
On Twitter, fans (mostly men) started criticizing Diana's hairless armpits.
And because a lot of people wanted to know all about the grooming habits of the fictional female superhero, when users search the term "Wonder Woman" on the platform, it often comes with "armpit hair" suggestions.
"Why/how are her armpits hairless?" has become the question people asked, as they wish to see at least a bit of hair tucked in there.
People started wondering, why her armpits weren't shown in a more natural way, and that they expected her to not have such grooming high up on her priority list.
While it is true that Gal Gadot's smooth armpits are the results of the directors' demands, and also because of the public's perception of what armpits should look like in pop culture, many people on the internet were expecting quite the other way around, suggesting that it's unrealistic for the Wonder Woman, especially during that time frame and condition, to have hairless armpits.
They even said that it could be a good point if her character can have even more body hair besides on her armpits.
Unfortunately, women with hair underneath their arms is not a norm in Hollywood.
It’s extremely rare for film directors to require female actresses to have hairy armpits, legs and eyebrows. The only time female body hair is explicitly required, is for mainstream films to be able to depict full frontal female nudity, without being considered pornography.
In this case, directors may require actresses to grow their pubic hair naturally, in order for their genitals to not be shown on screen. And if that's not possible, the director may ask the actress to wear a merkin (an artificial hair for the pubic area).
This isn't the first time that Diana Prince as Wonder Woman has been depicted in this way.
Past iterations of Wonder Woman have featured actresses sporting hairless armpits. The thing is, despite Hollywood has portrayed a character one way for years, doesn't mean it should continue to do so.
This is why Gal Gadot's portrayal of the famous Amazonian with hairless armpits sparked quite a lot of debate on social media.
It's worth noting, this isn't the only criticisms Gal Gadot received.
As a matter of fact, people also criticized the size of her breasts, among others.
"It's just empty talk. I understand that part of what I'm doing means being exposed. And part of being exposed is being under fire," she told Israeli website Ynet. "When I was younger I would take criticism really hard. But now it mostly amuses me. The true Amazons had one boob so it wouldn't bother them in their archery," she said. "So it's not going to be like real Amazons. We always try to make everyone happy but we can't."
Regardless, because nobody can change the way things are in the film, people on the have made a slight tweak to Gal Gadot's armpits.
There are even memes about it.
And when the film is finally released to the theaters, it's revealed that Warner Bros. clearly listened.
Having caught in the armpit gate, Gal Gadot's armpits have been digitally altered to have the skin to match the rest of her body.
