Facebook announced Trending, a new section in the top right corner of the News Feed that highlights events, TV shows and articles that are being talked about by its users around the site. Stories that appear inside Trending are picked by Facebook's algorithms that identify the amount of keywords on the social network and then find the associated page to link to.
The company said that these web pages don't come only from public Facebook Pages and public figures, but also from Pages that the user follows and from posts by his/her friends.
With Trending, Facebook intends to be the place where users check for news - whether it's in the News Feed or inside a dedicated Facebook app just for news.
Trending is rolling out first to the US, UK, India, and Australia.
