‘Blockchain’ Is More Popular Than 'Cryptocurrency', According To Data From Google

Google search data has always been one of the ways to know the trends among people. And here, its data reveals that people are starting to put more interest in blockchain than cryptocurrency.

Following the massive hype of cryptocurrencies, especially Bitcoin, in 2017, Google Trends data suggest that the term ‘blockchain’ is gradually becoming a more popular search keyword than ‘cryptocurrency.’

This marks the first time the technology briefly overtook 'cryptocurrency, as sentiments toward blockchain increase.

Worldwide, the term consistently attracted more searches since at least April 2018.

In comparison, the term 'bitcoin' continues to be the most commonly searched "cryptocurrency" term.

According to Google Trends, web searches that use the keyword 'bitcoin' is almost 10 times more popular than terms like ‘cryptocurrency’ and ‘blockchain.’

For the record, before the 2017’s crypto-hype, Google Trends data showed searches for the terms ‘cryptocurrency’ and ‘blockchain’ to have remained relatively close in popularity over the previous years, with the exception of a few irregularities.

It’s worth pointing out that Google Trends only shows the relative popularity of a search term.

"The resulting numbers are then scaled on a range of 0 to 100 based on a topic’s proportion to all searches on all topics," explained Google. What this means, there is no telling what the real numbers for ‘blockchain’ and ‘cryptocurrency’ searches really are.

Sentiments about blockchain is likely to last longer than cryptocurrencies, or even Bitcoin. The reason is because the technology can be implemented in various conditions, and considered as a solution to some of the world's common problems regarding data transparency and safety.
