Southeast Asians have been renowned for taking up mobile social media technologies, and Instagram is no exception.

Instagram revealed that with no less than 45 million users, Indonesia is its largest market in Asia.

"In Instagram, there are various and interconnected communities, including Instameet Jakarta, which is one of the largest in the world," said Sri Widowati, Instagram Country Director for Facebook Indonesia, during a presentation in Kuningan, South Jakarta.

And not just that. Indonesia is also one of Instagram's biggest markets in the world.

Indonesians are the most obsessed with Instagram, as it topped Asia Pacific's list of Instagram's biggest markets, according to Facebook's internal data. This number has more than doubled from the 22 million users back in early 2016.

By the end of 2017's first quarter, Indonesia accounted for over 6 percent of Instagram's 700 million monthly active users.

According to Instagram, users in Indonesia seem to be productive in creating contents.

Instagram's product marketing director Susan Rose sees this as an opportunity for businesses and brands to get closer to their customers. "Business adoption through Instagram in Indonesia is among the top five in the world," she said.

In addition, Indonesians are also the most active in the world at posting Instagram Stories, a feature that allows users to post ephemeral updates that vanish after 24 hours.

As a matter of fact, Indonesians post Instagram Stories twice as much as the global average.

Through its simple layout and stunning photo- and video-sharing capabilities, Instagram has changed the way how people on the web share their lives with others.

Susan Rose revealed that the U.S.-based company attracted as much as 80 percent of its community from outside that country, much of which is in the Asia Pacific region, with Indonesia topping its list.

"Indonesia is an important and thriving part of the Instagram community and the strength we're seeing in Indonesia is translating into the overall strength we have on the Instagram platform globally," she said during a press conference in Jakarta,

Instagram has also become a hub for many businesses to set up their shops, with as many 8 million business accounts registered worldwide, 1 million of which are also advertisers on the social media platform.

"So they're leveraging the products they have to grow and build their communities," added Rose.

At this time, Dangdut singer Ayu Ting Ting with 21 million followers was named the Indonesian with the most followers on Instagram. The number one in the world is Instagram's own account with 225 million followers, followed by Selena Gomez with 123 million followers.
