Mixi (ミクシィ, stylized as mixi), an online Japanese social networking service owned by Mixi, Inc., was launched. The social network was founded by Kenji Kasahara in 1999 before becoming incorporated in 2000.
Headquarters are in Shibuya, Tokyo, Mixi is more of a social network for community entertainment where the service provides a platform where users can meet others based on common interests. Users can send and receive messages, write in a diary, read and comment on others' diaries, organize and join communities, and invite their friends.
The word "Mixi" came from "I" for users and "mix" for people connecting with one another. The service is heavily dependent on open-source: Linux, Apache, MySQL, and Perl.
