'The A to Z of AI' From Google And Oxford Wants To Help People Understand What AI Is

The A-Z of AI

As data became abundance, many started utilizing AI for automation. But for the rest of the world, the technology remains a highly scientific subject.

While there have been many explainers out there that want to make AI easier to understand for the non-technical people, many were left with more questions than answers.

This is because AI is still closely tied to science fiction, and is still considered a thorny subject, packed with complex terminology and contradictory information, and general confusion.

Here, 'The A to Z of AI' wants to help a bit with that.

According to the site's FAQ, the idea for Google and the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) in making this yet another explainer is because:

"There’s a great deal of information out there on AI, but it’s not always easy to distinguish fact from fiction or root out entry-level introductions among the educational material. 'The A-Z of AI' is a beginner’s guide, designed to help anyone get their bearings with a complex topic."
"AI often sounds like a highly scientific subject. There’s a lot of material out there, but it’s not always easy to understand."

"This beginner’s A-Z guide is a collaboration between the Oxford Internet Institute at the University of Oxford and Google, intended to break a complex area of computer science down into entry-level explanations that will help anyone get their bearings and understand the basics."

As a beginner’s guide, the explainer is designed to help anyone interested in AI to get their hold of this complex topic.

With increased usage of AI, the two note how users are “becoming increasingly interested in developing their understanding of what AI is, how it works.”

The A-Z of AI

The guide’s FAQ section explained that:

"The 26 topics chosen are by no means an exhaustive list, but they are a great place for first-timers to start. The team carefully balanced their selections across a spectrum of technical understanding, production techniques, use cases, societal implications, and ethical considerations."

AI is already in use in about just every facet of the society.

From the tech inside people's smartphones, to spam filters, government surveillance systems, self-driving machines and robots, the military, space exploration, in healthcare, research, and many other fields.

With 'The A to Z of AI' portal, Google and OII create a series of explainers to outline the terms, including the fundamentals, ethics, its impact on society, and how it’s created.

The AI explainer will be “refreshed periodically, as new technologies come into play and existing technologies evolve.”
