Alexa commoditizes search

12/12/2005

Alexa opened its search index and web-crawling features to third-party programs through a set of web services and APIs. This would allow anyone to use Alexa’s servers and processing power to mine its index to discover things. For instance, to outsource the crawl needed to create a vertical search engine.

Alexa offered this service for $1 per CPU hour consumed. $1 per GB of storage used, $1 per 50 GB of data processed, $1 per GB of data uploaded on Alexa. The total consumption charges depend on "consuming processor cycles, or storage, or bandwidth."
