Google Experienced Rare Outage Across Many Of Its Services That Lasted Hours

As one of the largest companies that thrives on the web, Google has the infrastructure and the capacity to stay reliable even in the worst conditions. But still that doesn't mean that things can't go wrong.

Google operates a complex network of services that may rely on the same resources, interconnected with other services.

And here, Google experienced a widespread outage that the U.S., Europe and parts of Asia including India, Japan, Singapore and Australia.

It started when people realized that Gmail was disrupted. At the time, users weren't able to attach files, and weren't able to send nor receive emails. Some even had trouble logging in.

The disruption then expanded to Google Meet, Google Docs, Google Keep and Google Voice, all of which experienced service disruptions.

Google Drive and other G Suite services were also affected.

"System reliability is a top priority at Google. We are making continuous improvements to make our systems better," wrote Google, announcing the issue.

At its peak, Downdetector, which shows overview of issues and outages with all kinds of services in real time, received over 2,800 reports from users having trouble with the Google suite of services.

Google quickly resolved the problem, but took more than 6 hours before all of its services returned to normal.

For example, users said that they were able to send and receive emails via the Gmail app. But uploading a file leads to an error message.

The company didn't say anything about what caused the outage.
