Pablo Escobar's Brother Won A $3 Million Dispute For Owning 'PabloEscobar.com'

Dealing with intellectual property or trademark can be difficult, one of which is when it's already legally purchased by someone else.

Roberto de Jesús Escobar Gaviria, the brother of the late drug lord Pablo Escobar, has proclaimed the rightful owner of the Pablo Escobar trademark. And here, he wanted to get his hands of a domain name, which shares that name: PabloEscobar.com

Through the family's company, Escobar Inc., Escobar Gaviria filed a cybersquatting claim with National Arbitration Forum, arguing that the owner of PabloEscobar.com was cybersquatting with his ownership of the domain name.

According to the decision, the domain owner was asking $3 million.

But here, Escobar Inc. won the dispute because "The National Arbitration Forum decided to transfer the domain to the rightful owner Escobar Inc," said a press release.

After being transferred, the domain is initially inactive.

But the Escobar, Inc. plans to start a website by 2020, where the company can sell Pablo Escobar-related products and merchandise, including the notorious proprietary flamethrower, the idea for which was reported stolen by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk.

"That’s not all, though. The website will also offer groundbreaking technology," according to CEO Olof Gustaffson. “We are in the process now of starting a $50 million technology company."

With the domain transferred to Escobar, Inc., Escobar Gaviria said that he is "happy", adding that "Escobar Inc. is the only true owner of anything relating to Pablo Escobar.

"Infringers need to stop. We will fight anyone that is in our way," he said.

Escobar, Inc. is a multinational private holding company based in Medellín, Colombia.

First established in 1984 by the cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar, the company was founded as means of funneling large sums of cash outside of Colombia with the help of his brother Roberto Escobar. One of the most notorious, was when the company aided the money laundering of over $420 million in profits made by Pablo Escobar per week.

Throughout its history, until the end of the 20th century, Escobar, Inc. has used many methods to win legal battle against its rivals, and earned tens of billions of dollars from selling illegal products around the globe.

After Pablo Escobar died from a fatal gunshot through his ear, the control of the company was passed to Roberto Escobar, where he continues to manage the assets of the Escobar family, including but not limited to the intellectual property rights and licensing of anything related to Pablo Escobar.

In the past, whoever was disliked by Escobar, would face a swift fate.

But because Escobar, Inc. has evolved, especially when it is having interests in technology and cryptocurrency, the family is using a legal way to obtain want it wants: a lawyer.

And that lawyer had helped the 'The King of Cocaine' family get the PabloEscobar.com domain name legally, from a person who purchased the domain name in the first place, cybersquatted it, and bravely demanded millions of dollars in return. As explained by Olof Gustaffson:

"Pablo Escobar spent hundreds of millions of dollars maintaining his image. We are the only true rights holders of anything relating to Pablo Escobar. People need to realize this and contact us for licensing deals. Anybody that does anything relating to Pablo Escobar without our consent will be punished. We are not scared to put up a legal fight for years if that is what it takes."

Pablo Escobar has also written history as the sole leader of the Medellín Cartel, a highly organized Colombian drug cartel that once at its peak sold a monthly shipments of 70 to 80 tons of cocaine to the U.S., and also as the wealthiest criminal of all time.
