'Resident Evil 4 Remake' Revealed, And The Internet Mourned For The Death Of A Dog

21/10/2022

Back in 2005, Capcom revealed the original Resident Evil 4 (RE4), the survival horror third-person action-shooter game.

In what appears to be a departure from the classic fixed camera angles and the slower survival horror gameplay of previous Resident Evil games, RE4 is more focused on becoming a dynamic shooting action-horror game. And apparently, gamers love it.

In fact, it won multiple Game of the Year awards, and has influenced the evolution of the survival horror and third-person genres, popularizing the "over-the-shoulder" third-person view.

And in 2022, during its Resident Evil Showcase event, Capcom revealed 'Resident Evil 4 remake', which sees the return of the rookie cop, turned world-class hero, Leon S. Kennedy.

The character is sent on a mission to rescue the U.S. president's daughter Ashley Graham, who has been kidnapped by a cult in rural Spain. There, Leon fights hordes of villagers infected by a mind-controlling parasite and reunites with the Asian-descent femme fatale spy Ada Wong.

But fans quickly spotted that something is missing.

Leon, Ashley and Ada, check. Ganados as the Plaga-infested villagers, and Dr. Salvador as the chainsaw-wielding man, also check. The antagonists like Osmund Saddler, Ramon Salazar, and Bitores Mendez? Also check. The two Verdugos as the executioners, Del Lago as the giant infected salamander are also present, and so does El Gigante the giant.

Dr. Luis Sera the biologist deuteragonist is there, and the mysterious ganado Merchant is also seen.

Even Ingrid Hannigan, Leon’s Field Operations Support, is making a return.

The one memorable character that is missing, is the dog.

Early in the original RE4 game, in the forest, Leon would find a dog with one of its legs trapped in a bear trap.

Leon can leave the poor dog alone, or save the dog. Doing the latter would have that dog help Leon on his first encounter with El Gigante. The dog would distract the giant, allowing Leon can pick up items inside the huts.

In RE4 remake however, it is seen that the dog is already dead when Leon found it.

In fact, based on how Leon responded to the situation, it seems like the dog has died for quite a while.

And with that, the internet simply mourned for the poor canine.

Even IGN, the video game and entertainment media website, has something to say about this, in which it expressed it on Twitter:

RE4 was originally meant to be a GameCube exclusive game.

But because gamers love it, Capcom quickly ported the game to numerous formats. And soon, it became a cross-platform hit, selling more than 10 million copies. It garnered universal acclaim for its story, gameplay, graphics, voice acting, and characters, and is often named one of the best video games ever made.

The game is regarded as one of the most influential games of the 2000s, particularly because of its influence in redefining the third-person shooter genre.

RE4 was the first that introduced offset camera angles that do not obscure action.

Reviewers praised the game to have "innovated two genres", inspiring developers of both survival horror and shooter games.

Since then, the over-the-shoulder viewpoint introduced in the original RE4 has become standard in third-person shooters and action games.

And since Capcom started creating remakes of its original Resident Evil titles, the two prior remakes (Resident Evil 2 remake and Resident Evil 3 remake) are also having the over-the-shoulder, despite being originally survival horror games than action-horror games.

This time, with RE4 remake, Capcom simply reimagines one of gaming's all-time classics.

Since RE2 remake and RE3 remake, fans have been speculating about RE4 remake. For what is worth, Capcom listens and delivers.

But unlike the survival horror approach Capcom made with RE2 remake and RE3 remake, in RE4 remake, the supercop-turned-government agent has a lot of skills and tricks up his sleeve.

For example, he could sprint, crouch and vault, jump off of roofs, dodge and counter attacks, kick and also use his combat knife.

It's worth noting though, that while the internet misses the dog, they didn't mind the missing Jack Krauser, a comrade of Leon who became one of the main antagonists in RE4.

Jack also does not appear on the RE4 remake trailers.

Fortunately, Capcom saved the good things for the last because many of the missing characters and elements from the original game, do appear in the remake. The audience couldn't be anymore pleased.
