Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus Troll Apple's iPhone 12 Series For Not Having A Charger

20/10/2020

The revelation of new iPhone lineup is one of the most anticipated tech event of the year. And this 2020 in no exception.

Apple has long been seen as sitting at the pinnacle of mobile technology, not because its iPhones introduce novel and unique features none in the competition has, but with its ability to create a so-called 'cult', and influence the market and rivals like no others.

This 2020, following the "Time Flies" event, Apple introduced iPhone 12 series, the fourteenth-generation iPhones as the successor of the iPhone 11 series. They were unveiled at an online only Apple Special Event on October 13, 2020.

In subsequent videos, Apple showed how capable the iPhone 12 is, and how the iPhone 12 Pro goes beyond that.

With 5G capabilities and the 5 nm A14 Bionic chip, Apple touted iPhone 12 series as 16% faster than the iPhone 11 series, and the most powerful iPhones ever built.

But that comes with a huge drawback: the iPhone 12 series don't come with a power adapter or Earpods in the box (except in France).

And this certainly invited competitors to make fun of it.

Samsung for example. The South Korean conglomerate company has long been the strongest and biggest rival of Apple in the phone business.

The company wasted no time in making fun of this situation, by sharing posts on social media networks, telling people that its phones are shipped with power adapters.

With a photo of a power adapter, Samsung gave it a caption that says "Included with your Galaxy".

The firm has also highlighted its inclusion of a 120Hz screen, something the iPhone 12 series don't have.

Xiaomi comes next.

The Chinese phone manufacturer shared a tweet, saying that it "didn't leave anything out of the box with the Mi 10T Pro."

The post is accompanied with a brief video that shows how the Android phone comes with a power adapter.

And as for OnePlus, the Chinese phone manufacturer launched its OnePlus 8T flagship on Wednesday, or a day after Apple introduced the iPhone 12 series.

In one of its posts, OnePlus pointed that it has included a 65W charger "free in the box." The text was clearly shown on screen at the 27:08 mark.

"Even though it costs us twice to manufacture as our previous power adapter when you buy the OnePlus 8T, don’t worry, we will throw it in the box for free,” the OnePlus executive said.

This is the first time a major smartphone manufacturer has released a mobile phone without a charger.

Apple emphasized that the exclusion of the charger is for the sake of protecting the environment. By abandoning chargers and by creating smaller boxes for the phones, the company could cut down e-waste. This in turn will give a significant and positive impact on the environment as it reduces carbon footprint.

But some people speculate that Apple in excluding the chargers is to actually increase its profit margins.

By excluding the charger, Apple can cut down the production cost, and profit further by forcing customers to buy the products separately. This is further emphasized with Apple iPhone 12 series phones having the USB-C to Lightning cable in the box. What this means, if buyers don't have a charger, they may have to buy one from Apple.

Some also said that by shipping its iPhone 12 series phones without chargers, allows Apple to push people to buy its own wireless charging devices, which make use of the magnetically attached MagSafe chargers.

Rivals created those posts as a way to make fun, and to troll Apple, using jokes.

Some praised the rivals for doing what they can with their marketing efforts. But Apple fans are again siding on Apple, saying that rivals reek of jealousy and desperation. They also said that rivals may end up following Apple's examples, sooner or later.

Apple has paved the way for competing companies many times in the past, like when it famously ditched the headphone jack. And this could also be the case with the power supplies.
