Yammer, Inc., an enterprise social networking service that was launched in 2008, was acquired by Microsoft.

Yammer was first launched in September 2008 when co-founder David Sacks, a former PayPal employee, developed the basic of Yammer while working on a startup project.

The company that had received around $142 million in funding, was sold to Microsoft for $1.2 billion in cash. Following the acquisition, Microsoft announced that the Yammer team would be incorporated into the Microsoft Office division, and later to Office 365.

Yammer is used for private communication within organizations and is an example of enterprise social software.
