Twitter Blue Subscribers Are Allowed To Download X's Videos: A Meme-Inducing Move

Twitter, X, videos

Twitter is one of the unique places on the internet, where users can "find real-time conversations and information about every subject imaginable from across the world."

Since the first ever tweet that was posted back in 2006 by co-founder Jack Dorsey, Twitter has evolved to become a town square, becoming a place where world leaders gather, and celebrities speak their voices.

It's also a place where businesses market their products, and where websites reach their audience.

Years have past, and Twitter is still relevant in the social media world, thanks to its unique influence helped it squeeze itself between giants like Facebook and Google.

Twitter was relatively resilient, and rarely made huge changes, until Elon Musk stepped over.

After far too many moves in such a small time frame, the billionaire Twitter owner finally launched a long-teased website he calls X.com, which has been made to redirect to Twitter.

Musk said that he wants to rebrand the popular social media's iconic blue bird logo with the logotype "X."

Twitter’s CEO Linda Yaccarino, tweeted to explain the company's mission.

"X is the future state of unlimited interactivity – centered in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking – creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities. Powered by AI, X will connect us all in ways we’re just beginning to imagine," she said.

As a result of the rebrand, and many people's confusion, Musk's X and also the big 'X' logo attracts quite a lot of memes.

Twitter users soon began discussing what the new Twitter media player will be named after this rebrand.

Soon many came to the conclusion that it will be called Xvideos, which ironically is also a name of a popular adult video site.

Even Musk's mother, Maye, is having fun with this.

A few fans used this opportunity to make an innuendo about how they would like to watch X-rated videos on Twitter.

Some others joked about how they’d react if their girlfriends asked whether or not they knew a site named Xvideos already existed before Twitter’s change.

Some users joked about how Twitter executives had not thought the X brand change through.

There were also some users who suggest Musk to also acquire Xvideos, so the conversion of Twitter to X shall be completed.

With the flood of 'Xvideos' memes bombarding Twitter, it didn't take long until the word becomes a trending topic.

Picking up the momentum, and also the hype, Twitter then introduced a new feature, where Twitter Blue subscribers can download videos shared on X by other subscribers.

That’s according to an update made to an X Help Center article titled "How to share and watch videos on Twitter."

Initially for users on iOS, to download a video, Twitter Blue subscribers can tap on the three-dot icon in the top right corner, and then choose 'Download video.'

It's said that all new videos uploaded to the platform shall be eligible for downloads, unless the poster specifically opts out.

Another thing, there’s also an age limit.

If your “account is under the age of 18,” then downloads won’t be turned on.

Also, if Twitter Blue users have set their account to private, no one other than their subscribers can see their videos and download them.

The settings to opt out of having videos downloadable, can be accessed on a per-tweet bases.

Beyond those cases, there are no limitations mentioned for video downloads.

Twitter's video player was announced back in September 2022, about a month before Musk's takeover of the company in October 2022.

It was a major move for Twitter, since it involved an update to the social media's media viewer feature, where videos can expand to full screen with a single click.

This gives viewers access to an immersive viewing experience.

And considering that X allows up to two-hour-long videos to be uploaded by Twitter Blue subscribers, Musk and Yaccarino are making it seem that X is becoming a place where users can share, view, and download huge and long videos.

What's more, X also has ad revenue sharing.

So here, the move in line with Musk's strategy, which is to make the platform more appealing to creators, and more competitive with other shortform social networks like TikTok and Instagram, which both allow users to download videos, for instance.

The move marks yet another step towards Musk's massive rebranding effort he once described as an all-in-one "everything app."
