Android version 5.0 "Lollipop" was first unveiled. The most major changes in Lollipop include a redesigned user interface built around Material Design, a responsive design language. Other changes include improvements to the notification system, upgraded Android Runtime (ART) officially replacing Dalvik, and improvement for battery usage.

Lollipop was first unveiled under the codename "Android L" during a keynote presentation at the Google I/O 2014. The Material Design focuses on cleaner design and increased grid-based layouts, responsive animations and transitions, padding, and depth effects such as lighting and shadows.

Lollipop has over 5,000 new APIs added for use by applications. With its new ART, the API level 21 operating system is able to support 64-bit architecture. The system also uses OpenGL ES 3.1.
