Napster was an internet darling, way before social media, way before pretty much anything.
Back in June 1999, two teenagers—Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker—launched a program that would later shook the foundations of the music industry: Napster. What began as a peer-to-peer file sharing service for MP3s quickly became a cultural and legal flashpoint. Within months, Napster amassed millions of users, fueling a digital revolution and enraging record labels in equal measure.
By 2001, following intense lawsuits led by American heavy metal band Metallica and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Napster was forced to shut down.
But the name, like its disruptive legacy, never truly disappeared.
Over the years, Napster went through a series of reinventions. It reemerged in the early 2000s as a legal subscription-based music service, changed hands multiple times—from Roxio to Best Buy to Rhapsody—and slowly faded into the crowded landscape of digital streaming. Then in 2022, a twist: Napster was acquired by Hivemind and Algorand, signaling ambitions to rebuild it for a Web3 era. But that direction shifted once again.
Fast forward to May 2025, Napster unveiled a bold new identity—no longer just a music brand, but now a generative AI company.
A legendary name, reborn. Infinite Reality is now Napster.
We’re uniting our groundbreaking AI and immersive tech under one iconic name. This isn’t just a rebrand. It’s a reinvention. Welcome to the future of the internet. pic.twitter.com/Ylxit0534F— Napster Corp. (formerly Infinite Reality) (@napster_corp) June 23, 2025
Rebranded as Napster Corporation under the umbrella of Infinite Reality, it launched Napster Spaces, a platform that redefines how people interact with websites.
Rather than static pages filled with blocks of text or limited chatbot boxes, Spaces brings websites to life using real-time AI video agents capable of speaking over 40 languages.
These avatars, powered by cutting-edge language models, don’t just mimic conversation—they engage, assist, and guide users through rich, context-aware interactions.

Napster Spaces lets you create stunning, #immersive pages where AI assistants talk with your customers, guide them, and convert curiosity into action.

Spaces works by analyzing the content of any website—whether it's a blog, a storefront, a help center, or a portfolio.
Once scanned, users can choose an avatar (or upload their own branded character), and paste a simple embed code to their site.
In moments, the site is transformed into an immersive experience where visitors can talk to an AI agent that draws knowledge directly from the latest page content. This isn’t just NLP; it’s live, video-based engagement that responds, reasons, and evolves in real time without needing retraining or content re-indexing.
The underlying technology emphasizes privacy and enterprise readiness.
Built on Microsoft Azure, Spaces complies with GDPR, SOC 2 Type II, and CSA STAR, ensuring that businesses can trust it with sensitive interactions. From FAQs to customer onboarding, product recommendations to troubleshooting, Spaces is positioned as the next frontier in intelligent, embedded customer experience.
With flexible deployment modes—full-page takeovers, small corner widgets, or minimalist avatars—Spaces is adaptable to different brand voices and UX styles.

Besides Spaces, Napster is also developing customizable avatars, powered by AI to create endless personalities, each with distinct voices.
Napster’s plan involves letting people create and customize new avatars or even make one in their own likeness.
To create this, Napster uses AI models from OpenAI and Google to develop a new “large persona model” (LPM) trained on 30 psychometric characteristics mined from organizational psychology, says Napster chief technology officer Edo Segal. Each companion embodies some sort of profession as a topical expert, along with therapists, doctors, nutritionists are chefs, architects, engineers, and educators.
Business-minded offerings help with everything from financial planning and tax strategy to legal issues and public policy.
And through its Napster View product, a 2.1-inch display that attaches to a laptop as a “second screen” for two-way 3D holographic video chats, users can have their Napster Companion avatars projected into holographic imagery.

Napster’s long evolution—from music piracy to music streaming to AI-powered conversational experiences—reflects the changing tides of the internet itself.
And by pivoting to AI, Napster joins like dozens of other "AI companions" out there.
In other words, Napster is no longer a pioneer it once was in the 1990s. In this field, it isn't the first mover.
Once known for disrupting the music industry, Napster is now aiming to disrupt how we interact with information and digital services. It’s a fitting pivot in a world increasingly shaped by AI agents, decentralized infrastructure, and experiential design. Whether it will redefine a new era of user interaction remains to be seen, but one thing’s clear: Napster never stopped trying to stay ahead of the beat.
While Napster's venture into the AI competition is new, the company is full of history.
Napster is a nostalgia-laden identity is making it unique among its viral giants and startups.
