WIMM Labs for Google

31/08/2013

As an attempt to have a strong ground in the wearable device business, Google acquired WIMM Labs.

Spokesperson from Google confirmed that Google had acquired WIMM Labs, last year in 2012 when the company is three years old. At that time WIMM Labs announced that they are signing an exclusive partnership with a big company without releasing further details.

WIMM Labs has a big potential in the market and this is why Google acquired it. The company allows developers to create apps for its smartwatch, which are then available for download at its own online store.

The first smartwatch from WIMM Labs was first released in 2011 with the name of WIMM One, a developer-centric smartwatch powered by Android 2.1 that was aimed at developers as a sort of concept flagship ahead of a broader consumer launch. The WIMM One used Bluetooth and Wi-Fi 802.11b/g for connectivity, had 256 MB of RAM plus a 667MHz processor, and used a screen design that refreshed once per minute to conserve battery life.

The WIMM One also let developers create applications that they could upload to the Micro App Store, which is still online today. By purchasing WIMM Labs, Google has not only acquired a smartwatch prototype, but an entire development platform that already runs on Android.
