Sun Microsystems was sold to Oracle Corporation. Oracle, previously only a software vendor, owned both hardware and software product lines from Sun.
In 2009, Sun and Oracle Corporation announced that they had entered the agreement under which Oracle would acquire Sun for $9.50 a share in cash that amounts to a total of $5.6 billion. Sun's shareholders voted to approve the proposal on July 16, 2009, although the deal was still subject to regulatory approvals. It took several months for the U.S. government and the European Commission to approve the deal.
In January 27th, 2010, Oracle completed its acquisition of Sun Microsystems, making Sun a wholly owned subsidiary of Oracle. Three days later, Sun's official website was closed.
