Twitter Redesigned Its Icons For A 'Bold' New Look That Is Subtle And Relatable

Twitter icons

Icons are those little pictograms or ideograms displayed to help users navigate on computer systems and on the web and apps. Twitter is updating them for a new look.

For more than often, icons are used to symbolize something. They make a visual representation of what should happen when users interact with them. Because they can be so eye-catchy and entice engagement, Twitter thinks that updating them is a good idea, and indeed it is.

The microblogging platform has gone through numerous changes over the years, and its previous major visual redesign happened back in August 2021, which also introduced updated icons to give the platform a cleaner and a more refined look.

"Following this launch, we kicked off a new iconographic set to continue the visual evolution based on a core set of principles we developed," the company said at the time.

And this time, it's again evolving its style, by announcing a set of redesigned icons.

The change is subtle, but is noticeable.

"The goal was to create a cohesive set of icons that are bold in shape and style yet still relatable and a little cheeky where possible," wrote Twitter in a tweet.

From what is shown, the icons do look similar, but the new ones are a little chubbier and more pronounced.

Twitter spokesperson Shaokyi Amdo stated that the update is rolling out to the web version of Twitter, along with iOS and Android.

Although this update might not seem like the most meaningful, a breath of fresh air is needed for something that is so ubiquitous on the internet.

Twitter, despite being a lot smaller than Meta's Facebook or Instagram, or TikTok, it's still regarded as the place where people share their opinions to the public.

It's the only popular online venue where many world leaders, influential figures, businessmen, brands, and ordinary netizens gather in one place, with each capable of freely expressing their opinions.

So here, just adding a refined appeal should make Twitter less boring.

The change is subtle by design, because Twitter only wants the evolution of style to only make users feel that it's only a little different from the last change.
