02/02/2020

As part of Super Bowl LIV, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, the U.S., its halftime show, official known as the Pepsi Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show, was one of the most viewed halftime of all time.

And that happened because it included guests appearances by Bad Bunny, J Balvin, and Emme Muñiz.

Most importantly, it was because the halftime was co-headlined by Jennifer Lopez and Shakira.

The halftime show received critical acclaim, receiving five Primetime Emmy nominations, winning one. It also received numerous other awards.

But there are controversies.

It all began in August 2019, when it was announced that Jay-Z's company Roc Nation had entered a deal with the NFL for Jay-Z and his company to produce the halftime show.

The next month, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira were selected to fill the halftime.

The two were selected, simply because the event was meant to reflect the Latin culture of the host city Miami.

During the event, both Jennifer Lopez and Shakira sang their most famous hits.

Lopez's appearance had five costume changes, whereas Shakira's had three costume changes.

The halftime show was critically acclaimed, with many praised the two Latina's performances, calling the halftime a major improvement to the previous year's halftime. Many said that the two stars brought euphoria that was never before presented, infusing joy of celebration through Latina heritage.

The two's performance was considered the most popular female performance in history, and also the most viewed Super Bowl halftime show on YouTube.

In fact, viewership for the halftime show was slightly higher than the game itself, which was viewed by an average of 99.9 million television viewers.

In short, the Pepsi Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show was a Miami-infused explosion of two sexy Latinas dancing and high-energy music.

For both Lopez and Shakira, the famous singers instantly became a lot more famous.

In social media platforms, posts and mentions that include hashtags for the Super Bowl and NFL that had the names of the two singers, spiked significantly.

On streaming platforms, both Lopez's and Shakira's music also experienced increased listeners. And digital downloads for the two's albums, also experienced massive increase.

Both Rolling StoneForbes reported massive disruption in most music charts, seeing Lopez's and Shakira's songs quickly propelled themselves up to the top.

While many praised the show, some reviews however, particularly among conservatives, reacted more negatively.

While the halftime would be written in history as one of the most viewed NFL halftime ever, many viewers reported that the show was inappropriate for children.

Some said that it was a mix of "hypersexual entertainment," with many parents said that the halftime should've come with a parental warning.

Two years later, in 2022, Jennifer Lopez revealed what many people may have never expected to hear from from the star.

Lopez recalled the Pepsi Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show, and while everything was glamorous and full of joy, she said that she didn't actually like sharing the stage with Shakira.

In a scene in her Netflix documentary, "Halftime," she said that her collaboration with Shakira was "the worst idea in the world."

While having two people share the headlining spot of the halftime show, may seem entertaining to spectators and viewers, but for the performers, it wasn't.

Traditionally, a show needs one headliner, and that headliner is the one who gets to construct the show, and choose whether or not a guest is needed. If two headliners are really required, the two must have enough time to show their best on stage. But at the Pepsi Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show, the two didn't have enough time.

The 2020 Super Bowl halftime show ran for about 14 minutes, giving Lopez and Shakira very little time to perform a selection of their biggest hits.

"We have six fucking minutes," Lopez said in the film, noting that it gave her little time to sing a good portion of any one song.

"We have to have our singing moments," she said. "It's not going to be a dance fucking revue. We have to sing our message."

"This is the worst idea in the world to have two people do the Super Bowl," said the Love Don't Cost a Thing singer. "It was the worst idea in the world."

"If it was going to be a double headliner, they should have given us 20 minutes," Lopez said to Shakira.

The annual Super Bowl remains one of the most highly anticipated events by sports enthusiasts in the U.S.. And its halftime show is often the most-watched musical event.

From Michael Jackson to Prince, as well as Beyoncé and Lady Gaga, world-famous artists have performed at the event since 1966.
