With The 'Biggest Upgrade In Over A Decade,' Users Can Finally Ask Google Maps Using Gemini

The LLM war fundamentally shifted public perception of artificial intelligence.

When OpenAI introduced ChatGPT, built on GPT-3.5 and refined through reinforcement learning from human feedback, the chatbot offered an intuitive conversational interface that generated coherent, context-aware responses to a wide range of queries.

Google, despite pioneering in many sectors, experienced an internal "code red", prompting a swift pivot.

From Bard, and later Gemini, early versions faced criticism for factual errors and less engaging performance compared to ChatGPT. But Google accelerated development aggressively, and quickly deeped the AI's integration across its ecosystem, allowing it to leverage vast user data, distribution channels, and product reach to close the gap rapidly.

Rather than relying solely on a standalone chatbot, Google embedded Gemini capabilities into core services like Search (via AI Overviews), Workspace productivity tools, Android devices, and Google Maps.

And this time, Google Maps has introduced two significant updates powered by its Gemini AI models.

First, is a conversational tool called 'Ask Maps' and second, is a redesigned driving experience known as 'Immersive Navigation.'

These changes aim to make location-based searches and route guidance more intuitive and responsive to real-world needs.

Ask Maps allows users to pose complex, natural-language questions about places and receive tailored suggestions.

Instead of relying on traditional keyword searches or sifting through reviews manually, people can ask for recommendations that factor in specific preferences or constraints. Examples include finding nearby spots to charge a device, locating cafes with short wait times, or planning a multi-stop road trip with side activities.

"Today, Google Maps is fundamentally changing what a map can do. By bringing together the world's freshest map with our most capable Gemini models, we’re transforming exploration into a simple conversation and making driving more intuitive than ever with our biggest navigation upgrade in over a decade," said Google in a blog post.

The feature draws on community contributions, past user interactions, and broader data to generate responses.

It began rolling out immediately in the U.S. and India, available on both Android and iOS versions of the Maps app, with plans to extend to desktop and additional regions over time.

The Immersive Navigation update represents a major shift in how driving directions are presented, described as the most substantial change to this part of the app in more than ten years.

It replaces the conventional 2D map view with a vivid 3D representation that incorporates nearby buildings, overpasses, terrain, and other environmental details.

This provides a clearer sense of surroundings during travel. Guidance includes highlighted lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, stop signs, and other road elements to assist with turns and merges.

The system also offers a wider perspective to help anticipate upcoming maneuvers, shows trade-offs between alternate routes, such as time saved versus toll costs or traffic levels, and includes practical details like parking recommendations upon arrival. Natural voice instructions and real-time updates further support the experience.

The rollout started in the U.S., with expectations for broader availability on Android, iOS, CarPlay, Android Auto, and compatible vehicles in the coming months.

These enhancements build on earlier integrations of AI in Google Maps, expanding conversational capabilities and visual realism to address everyday navigation and discovery challenges more effectively.
