Instagram maintains support for carousel posts that combine multiple images or videos into a single item viewers can swipe through in their feeds.
These posts have long served as a format for sharing sequences of related content without requiring separate individual uploads for each piece. For years the platform enforced a single caption that appeared beneath the entire carousel regardless of how many slides it contained. That rule meant any explanatory text, context, or commentary had to fit into one block that remained visible no matter which slide a person was viewing at a given moment.
In May 2026 some accounts began encountering the option during testing.
The broader release started on June 18 when the toggle for separate captions began appearing for additional users. The change removes the requirement that every slide share the same text description.
To use the feature a person starts a new post and selects the photos or videos intended for the carousel. After the selection is complete the interface moves to the caption screen in the standard way.
Tapping the caption field now surfaces a control that can be switched on to enable multiple captions.
Once activated the screen displays a separate text entry area for each slide arranged in the order they will appear when the post is published.
The captions function independently.
Text entered for the first slide shows when that slide is visible. Swiping to the next slide replaces the visible caption with the text assigned to that specific item. Viewers therefore encounter different descriptions as they move through the sequence.
The feature applies only to posts created after the option becomes available on an account. Existing carousels published before the update cannot be edited to add individual captions. The platform does not provide a way to convert older posts to the new format.
This caption adjustment builds directly on an earlier expansion of carousel capacity.
In 2024 the maximum number of slides permitted in one post rose from ten to twenty.
The combination of longer sequences and per-slide captions now allows creators to distribute more detailed accompanying information across an extended series of visuals.
Instagram has introduced several other modifications to its service in recent months. Camera tools on Android devices received support for Ultra HDR imaging and Night Sight modes. Separate controls were added that let people adjust the order of posts on their own profile grids and influence how the algorithm surfaces content in their personal feeds.
photo dumps just leveled up
now you can add different captions to every slide of a carousel
1.create a carousel post
2.tap the caption area
3.toggle on “multiple captions”
4.write a unique caption for each slide— Instagram (@instagram) June 18, 2026
Distribution of the multiple caption option is proceeding on a gradual schedule.
Some accounts received access immediately while others may wait several days. The process does not require any special action beyond having the current version of the application installed. If the toggle does not appear after an update users can continue checking the caption field on new carousels over the following week.
The official Instagram account shared the steps for enabling the feature through its presence on another social platform.
The instructions provided there align with the controls visible inside the Instagram application itself. No additional settings or account permissions are required beyond the standard post creation flow.
The interface change keeps all other post elements in place.
Location information, tagged accounts, music selections, and sticker additions continue to function exactly as they did before. Only the caption section gains the new toggle and expanded text fields.
Over time the posting tools on the platform have shifted to accommodate more granular control over how content appears to viewers. The addition of per-slide captions represents one specific area where the composer now supports finer distinctions between individual pieces within a single published item.
