On May 5, 2025, Microsoft officially retired Skype, marking the end of a 22-year journey for one of the most influential communication platforms in internet history.
Launched in 2003, Skype revolutionized online communication by enabling free voice and video calls over the internet. Its discontinuation reflects the evolving landscape of digital communication and Microsoft's strategic shift toward its newer platform, Microsoft Teams.
At its peak, Skype boasted over 300 million monthly active users, becoming synonymous with internet-based communication. It was widely used for personal calls, business meetings, and even international conferences, thanks to its user-friendly interface and reliable service.
Despite its early success, then came its fall.

Skype's prominence began to wane in the face of emerging competitors and changing user preferences.
The rise of mobile-first applications like WhatsApp, FaceTime, Zoom, and Slack offered users more integrated and versatile communication options. Additionally, Microsoft's focus shifted toward developing Microsoft Teams, a platform designed to cater to the collaborative needs of modern workplaces.
The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated the adoption of platforms like Zoom and Teams, which provided robust features for remote work and virtual meetings.
Skype struggled to keep pace with these innovations, leading to a steady decline in its user base.

In response to the evolving communication landscape, Microsoft announced the retirement of Skype and encouraged users to transition to Microsoft Teams. Teams offers a comprehensive suite of features, including chat, video conferencing, file sharing, and integration with other Microsoft 365 applications. Users can log into Teams using their existing Skype credentials, and Microsoft has provided tools to facilitate the migration of contacts and chat history.
While Skype for Business will remain operational for a limited time, Microsoft recommends that organizations plan their transition to Teams to take advantage of its enhanced capabilities and ongoing support.
For users who prefer not to migrate to Teams, Microsoft has provided options to export Skype data, including chat history and contacts. This data will remain accessible until January 2026, after which it will be permanently deleted.
Additionally, users with Skype numbers can port them to other providers, such as Google Voice, Viber, or Zoom Phone, although certain limitations may apply based on location and service availability.
Skype was founded in 2003 by Swedish entrepreneur Niklas Zennström and Danish entrepreneur Janus Friis, with development by Estonian engineers Ahti Heinla, Priit Kasesalu, and Jaan Tallinn.
Skype introduced a revolutionary way to communicate, by leveraging Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), a technology that allows users to make voice and video calls over the internet, significantly reducing the cost of international communication at the time.
Skype's user-friendly interface and free calling features led to rapid adoption. By 2005, it had amassed millions of users worldwide, catching the attention of major tech companies. In September 2005, eBay acquired Skype for $2.6 billion, aiming to integrate it into its e-commerce platform. However, the integration didn't yield the expected synergies, leading eBay to sell a majority stake in Skype to a group of investors in 2009.
Skype's popularity soared in the late 2000s and early 2010s. It became synonymous with video calling, especially for families and businesses seeking cost-effective communication solutions. By 2011, Skype had over 170 million connected users and was handling over 300 billion minutes of calls annually.
Recognizing its potential, Microsoft acquired Skype in May 2011 for $8.5 billion, integrating it into its suite of products, including Windows, Xbox, and Outlook. This acquisition aimed to bolster Microsoft's communication offerings and compete with emerging platforms.
