The ability of a Large Language Models-powered AI is only as good as the data it has been trained on. And with only text input, it only cannot go too far.
Since OpenAI introduced ChatGPT, others quickly entered the field and began competing in the emerging but extremely lucrative generative AI chatbot business. And Google is one of the biggest players in the industry.
After giving free users of Gemini the ability to upload images and also make the AI generate its own AI-generated images, this time, Google announced that it's making Gemini capable of processing documents.
"Upload multiple Google Docs, PDFs, and Word documents from Google Drive or your device. Get quick summaries, personalized feedback, and actionable insights—streamlining your workflows and saving you time," said Google
Google has made this feature "available to all Gemini users."
What this means, Google is allowing all Gemini users to take their workload to the next level.
Thanks to the update from Google and the Gemini AI platform, all Gemini users can now upload documents to the platform and receive AI-powered improvements and customization options.
To upload a file, all users have to do, is tap on the plus sign when asking Gemini a question, and select 'files.'
Users can do this by directly uploading the files to Gemini from the web or mobile device, as well as through a Google Drive file picker.
And specifically on Android, file upload unlocks the 'Ask about this PDF feature in Files by Google, as well as the 'Talk Like about this' on Pixel 9 series and Galaxy S24/S25.
Google first introduced document upload back in May.
However, this feature was only available for Gemini users with Gemini Advanced subscription.
This time the change means that all users, including those who use Gemini for free, can upload "multiple" Google Docs, PDFs, and Word documents, and have Gemini 2.0 Flash take a look.
Document upload is now available to all Gemini users.

This update is not even the best of it.
Google also revealed that its Gemini Deep Research platform is arriving on certain Google Workspace tiers, giving users deeper and smarter insights to complex topics.
"Deep Research explores complex topics on your behalf and presents its findings in a comprehensive, easy-to-read report," explained Google in a Google Workspace Updates blog post, adding that it "brings hours of research to your fingertips in mere minutes."
This includes tasks such as industry research, helping understand emerging trends to inform market analysis, competitive research around other firms, customer research on prospective leads, and helping educators with grant writing, lesson planning, class projects, or presentations.
"Thorough research can take a lot of time between planning, searching, browsing, analyzing, and reporting. It can be tedious work and often difficult to even know where to start. Deep Research can save hours of work by browsing the web on your behalf, analyzing information in real-time, and developing comprehensive research reports in minutes to get you up to speed on just about anything."
It's worth that at this time, the feature only support document uploads.
If users wish to upload spreadsheets or ode files, they are still required to have a Gemini Advanced subscription.
