Firefox Multi-account Container Add-on: Enables Multi-Account Web Browsing Experience

Mozilla has released an add-on called 'Firefox Multi-Account Containers'. What it does, is allowing Firefox users to use the web with multiple identities or accounts simultaneously.

Simply put, the add-on allows users to containerize all of their online lives. For example, separating their personal browsing completely from their work-related browsing. Any cookies that are downloaded in one container are not available in other containers.

While users can use the add-on to keep their work and private life separate, they can also use it to login to the same site with a different account. This is possible due to each container maintaining its own set of cache, local storage and cookies.

This allows users to browse the web without having to spread identifiable information.

Mozilla said that:

"Each Containers stores cookies separately, so you can log into the same site with different accounts and online trackers can’t easily connect the browsing."

At start, users can use up to 4 default containers, with each having their own color-coded tabs. Users can also create their own if they want to.

Firefox Multi-account Container add-on was firstly released by Mozilla as part of the organization’s Test Pilot program.

The first time Mozilla brought Container Tabs to the Test Pilot program was back in June 2016. This feature was spotted once again when the company has released a new Container Tabs Test Pilot Experiment.

The add-on works on all Firefox versions, starting with 51 (AMO) or 53 (GitHub).

However, the Firefox 57 Nightly users will be asked to download the add-on straight from GitHub, and set the preference "extensions.legacy.enabled" to true and the preference “xpinstall.signatures.required” to false.

Websites can be launched in containers by right-clicking on the links, and selecting "open link in new container tab" option. Users also can open a new container tab first and then just use bookmarks feature or the address bar to load websites into the container.

This feature is already available on Google Chrome with its built-in multi-account browsing support. So this Multi-account Container add-on is already long overdue for Firefox users.
