Gemini Adds Chat History And Memory Import To Ease Switching From Other AI Assistants

Gemini

Google has introduced new features that let users import chat history and personalized memory summaries from other AI chatbots.

Since the debut of OpenAI's ChatGPT, and the wave of competitors that followed, the AI space has turned into an arms race, with companies pushing to build more powerful models while continuously adding new features.

Despite the growing number of options, many users stick with a single service. It's not always about preference, but convenience, since switching often means starting over, rebuilding context, and effectively "reintroducing" themselves to a new AI. For many, that friction isn't worth it.

Google is aiming to remove that barrier, at least for those open to trying something new.

The update is designed to make switching between AI assistants easier by preserving past conversations and personal context, reducing the need to start from scratch.

To import chat history, users first need to export their data as a ZIP file from their current AI service.

In a blog post, Google said that:

"Moving to Gemini just got incredibly simple. Bring your memories, preferences and chat history from other AI apps to Gemini, so you can pick up right where you left off without starting over."

Google provides guidance for common platforms: for ChatGPT, this involves going to Settings > Data controls and selecting the export option; for Claude, users navigate to Settings > Privacy and request an export for a chosen date range.

The resulting ZIP file, which can be up to 5 GB in size, is then uploaded to Gemini via the import section in Settings.

Up to five such files can be uploaded per day. Once processed, the imported conversations appear in Gemini’s side panel, marked with a distinct icon. They become searchable, and users have the option to delete individual chats or entire imported batches. Note that elements like images or generated files from the original chats are not transferred.

A separate "Import Memory" tool focuses on transferring a structured summary of user details.

Users copy a provided prompt from Gemini and paste it into their previous AI assistant.

The prompt instructs the other model to generate a neutral overview covering categories such as demographics, interests and preferences, relationships, dated events or projects, and any custom instructions, using third-person phrasing to avoid direct "you" or "I" references. The resulting summary is then pasted back into Gemini, helping the model adapt its responses more quickly to the user’s background and preferences.

In connection with this change, Google has renamed the “Past chats” section in the app to simply "Memory."

The features are currently rolling out to free and paid consumer accounts on the Gemini app and website.

They are not available for business or enterprise users, accounts belonging to individuals under 18, or users located in the European Economic Area, the UK, and Switzerland due to regional restrictions. The rollout coincides with other recent Gemini updates, including the release of Gemini 3.1 Flash Live.

In the competitive AI space, where context and continuity play a significant role in user experience, these import options provide a practical way to maintain conversation threads and personal details when exploring or switching assistants.
