Google Gemini With Personalization Can Utilize Google Apps, Starting With Users' Search History

Google Gemini Personalization

War only persists when more than one party has enough firepower to keep the battle going.

And since OpenAI released ChatGPT, the tech titan Google has more than enough resources to catch up, and be one of its most powerful rivals in the generative, Large Language Models-powered AI market, with Gemini.

Unlike ChatGPT, Google has a long list of apps and features that have been gathering users' data for ages.

And this is where things matter, and where Google can take advantage of.

This time, Google said that Gemini with personalization can use users' Google apps, starting with your Search history, to deliver contextually relevant responses that are adapted to their individual interests.

This approach allows Google to make Gemini a lot more personal, capable of responding to queries that are tailored based on users' needs and requirements, based on their activities on Google apps.

In a blog post, Google explains that:

"With Gemini, we’re creating a personal AI assistant — one that doesn’t just answer general questions, but understands you. Today, we’re taking another step toward this goal with the launch of Gemini with personalization, a new experimental capability."

"Powered by our experimental Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking model, personalization allows Gemini to connect with your Google apps and services, starting with Search, to provide responses that are uniquely insightful and directly address your needs. With your permission, Gemini can now tailor its responses based on your past searches, saving you time and delivering more precise answers."

With so many AI companies launching chatbots to rival one another in this increasingly-fierce competition, Google is tapping into its greatest competitive edge to make Gemini stand out: Google Search.

When personalization is enabled, Gemini can automatically analyze user queries to determine if they relate to past Search history. If so, it leverages that data to enhance its responses.

Powered by the Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental model, this feature only references search results when the AI deems them helpful.

For example, if a user asks for restaurant or travel recommendations, Gemini may draw from recent food-related searches to provide more personalized suggestions.

In another blog post, Google said that:

"We’ll only use your Search history when our advanced reasoning models determine that it’s actually helpful. Early testers have found Gemini with personalization helpful for brainstorming and getting personalized recommendations. We’ll continue to gather user feedback on the most useful applications of this capability."

Beyond the ability to utilize information taken from users' activities on Google Search, this March update also introduce a lot more, "at no cost."

For example, Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental gets new features like file upload and a longer context window.

Google is also upgrading Deep Research with Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental, in order to enhance its abilities across all research stages — from planning and searching to reasoning, analyzing and reporting — creating higher-quality, multi-page reports that are more detailed and insightful.

"By pairing Deep Research with this new model, we expect the quality of reports to keep getting even better," the company said.

Because more information given to Google to process means a lot more uproar from privacy advocates, Google said "you're firmly in control of your information."

For instance, before accessing Search history or any other apps, Gemini will ask for permission, ensuring users have full control over how their data is used.

Regarding data transparency, Gemini provides a detailed outline of how it personalizes responses. Users can also see which data sources—saved info, past chats, or Search history—were referenced in generating a response.

"When you’re using the personalization experiment, Gemini displays a clear banner with a link to easily disconnect your Search history," Google explained.

"With this experimental feature, Gemini will only access your Search history when you've selected Gemini with personalization, when you’ve given Gemini permission to connect to your Search history, and when you have Web & App Activity on. You can also view and manage your Search history."
