Major Design Update To Google Search Puts More Context Into Images And Videos

Images have become something that cannot be separated from web pages anymore, and they are practically everywhere making things a lot more colorful.

The search engine giant Google is one of the first places people visit when they are looking for something on the web. Making its design in line with the updated Material Design language and after some testing, Google is rolling out an updated design to its Image Search on desktop.

The tweaked design essentially adds titles/captions and URL to image thumbnails. Google also adds little images to the top filters, as well as some other redesigns. Also, Google is working in conjunction with picture industry consortium CEPIC and the digital standards body IPTC to be able to extract rights-related information from image files and displaying it alongside images returned from searches.

For people who are scanning images for content, these extra pieces of information can certainly help them understand the page behind the image, and also the images themselves.

The changes in Image Search also make it a lot similar to Google's Image Search on mobile.

Google makes several minor changes to its search engine appearance each year, but this one is rather big as the focus is to put more context into images.

In its 20th birthday, Google's redesign of its Image Search shows how visual elements on online content are becoming increasingly important for SEO, as marketers are trying to reach their target audience. And this design update should affect marketers' reach, as things are becoming more and more immersive.

As the company explained:

"These changes are aimed at helping people better find information visually, and making it easier to pursue the things people come to Google Images for help with, like shopping for products, styling a room, or tackling a DIY project."

"We're introducing three fundamental shifts in how we think about Search, including a range of new features that use AI to make your search experience more visual and enjoyable. And when you know you want to search visually, we're making the Google Images experience even more useful and powerful."

Google Image Search update

Google is also changing the look of its search results to make it easier to incorporate meaningful videos in the main search research.

The goal here is to make it possible for users who make a search about a topic, to sort through the video previews to find the content that are more closely related to their queries. Google illustrated how the updated could help someone planning a trip to Zion National Park.

As Google explained:

"With featured videos, we take our deep understanding of the topic space (in this case, the most important landmarks in the park) and show the most relevant videos for those subtopics. For Zion National Park, you might see a video for each attraction, like Angels Landing or the Narrows. This provides a more holistic view of the video content available for a topic, and opens up new paths to discover more."

The updates should make visual contents that have imageries and videos to better tell their context to marketers' target audience.
