OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Custom Instructions to 5,000 Characters, Giving Users More Room to Personalize

In the fierce large language models (LLMs) war, it's more than what the eyes can see.

Since the defining moment following the release of OpenAI's ChatGPT, the company has consistently pushed to make its flagship chatbot more personal and useful.

And the feature called Custom instructions arrived in July 2023 as a quiet but powerful addition.

It lets users set persistent preferences about themselves and how they want responses styled.

This eliminates the need to repeat the same context in every chat.

What began as a beta for Plus subscribers quickly rolled out more broadly, turning one-off conversations into tailored partnerships.

Now, in mid-2026, OpenAI has dramatically expanded that feature by increasing the custom instructions character limit from 1,500 to 5,000.

Announced via the official ChatGPT account with a delightfully spooky Dracula-themed example, it gives an example of how 5,000 characters should be more than enough for most users to craft far richer, more nuanced directives without sacrificing clarity or hitting arbitrary cutoffs.

The extra space unlocks genuinely useful depth.

Professionals can embed detailed role context, industry-specific knowledge, workflow preferences, and response guardrails all in one place.

Think a lawyer specifying jurisdiction rules, citation styles, risk tolerances, and tone expectations that apply across every drafting session.

Writers and creators gain room for voice guidelines, audience personas, forbidden phrases, and structural habits that keep output consistently on-brand.

Even casual users benefit: a detailed life-coach persona like the viral Count Dracula example can now include layered behavioral triggers, vocabulary rules, and decision frameworks that make interactions feel truly intelligent rather than repetitive.

Longer instructions also reduce prompt engineering fatigue and context-window waste, letting the model draw on comprehensive user context without users constantly reminding it.

The result is more consistent, higher-quality output with less effort, which is exactly the kind of incremental but meaningful upgrade that keeps ChatGPT competitive as rivals race to match its personalization game.

For power users who previously truncated their ideal setups, this feels like finally getting the full canvas they always wanted.

Rather than grabbing headlines with a brand-new model, OpenAI is trying to refine the experience millions of people already use every day.

The expanded custom instructions limit reflects a growing focus on making ChatGPT adapt to users over time, reducing friction and improving consistency across conversations.

As AI assistants become increasingly capable, personalization is emerging as one of the key battlegrounds. Giving users more control over how ChatGPT understands their preferences may seem like a small change on paper, but for frequent users, it has the potential to make every conversation feel noticeably more natural and productive.
