Opera 51 Introduces New Features, And Promises Speed Improvements

Opera releases version 51 of its web browser. Based on Chromium, the company claims that it's faster than ever before.

The version adds a click scroll feature which should make things easier for users to use the browser without a mouse, and not to mention a tool to block cryptojacking scripts from running on users’s computers.

Then there is an easier reset process introduced with the 'Reset browser setting', which can be found in Settings > Browser.

This option deletes all the data excluding bookmarks, internet history, and saved passwords. This is a tweak from previous version which involved creating a separate preferences file and removing the entire browser from the system.

The version also marks the return of the bookmark import/export feature.

So when users are watching videos, in which they can pop out the player in a separate window, in version 51, Opera has added a 'back to tab' option in the video pop out to go back to the tab playing the video.

Opera 51 is based on Chromium 64, and claims to be 38 percent faster (Speedometer 2.0 benchmark) than Firefox 58 which was released a bit earlier, when tested on an HP Spectre running Windows 10 operating system.

This is a much-needed update for Opera to to counter the advancements of its competitors.

And also with the version release, Opera is finding itself inside a battle waged between Google Chrome and Firefox 57 (Quantum).

Other changes include:

  • Desktop wallpaper in Opera.
  • Allowing all websites to use Flash.
  • Having two collapsible lists for open and recently closed tabs.
  • Permanently keep tabs pinned no matter what restart option users have selected.
  • A mechanism for backing up and restoring working profile preferences.
  • A style update to Private mode.
