Google Chrome is the world's most popular browser, and no other is able to come near it in terms of user number.
With such an ubiquitous presence, Google controls a significant portion of the browser market, Google is able to provide billions of users globally with features like cross-platform sync and a password manager, all backed by regular updates with support for emerging technologies.
But that doesn't mean the powerful product is flawless.
This time, an issue on Chrome for Microsoft Windows, caused saved passwords to disappear, affecting a significant number of users.
Google has since fixed the problem, and Google is sorry.
That is at least what it can say as an excuse.
This happened because Chrome on its own doesn't have an independent password manager.
Instead, it uses the Google Password Manager that syncs with users account and all the Android devices set up using that account. However, Google reported disruption on Google Workspace, and blamed it on a "change in product behavior without proper feature guard."
Google documentation doesn't detail the exact cause, or say how many users were affected by the missing password bug.
But it did say that 25% of the global user base experienced the configuration change rollout, and 2% of those users couldn't access the saved passwords on Google Password Manager.
Doing the math, 25% of Chrome's 3 billion users would be 750 million, and 2% of that would be 15 million.
All of which, are staggering numbers.
Google said that passwords were unavailable for a 17 hours and 51 minutes.
Before launching the fix, to Google's credit, users were provided an interim fix, which is launching Chrome with a command line flag:
Later the next day, the company issued an apology and marked the issue as fixed on July 26.
To ensure you aren't stuck on the problematic Chrome build, Google recommends restarting the browser.
Users should also update Chrome to the latest release.
While Google has fixed the issue and issued an apology, this incident shines light on the importance of keeping browser updated at all times.
