'Cancel Netflix,' The Exodus Over Pro-Trans Cartoons That Ruin The 'Health Of Your Kids'

Elon Musk has again stepped into culture-war territory.

But this time, it's not political. Instead, he is calling to his vast social-media audience to cancel Netflix, and end their subscription to the streaming platform. His provocative plea arrives amid renewed criticism of a Netflix animated show that features a teenage transgender protagonist, although that show, Dead End: Paranormal Park, had already been canceled in 2023.

The public flare-up began when Musk reposted a clip originally shared by the right-wing account Libs of TikTok, which accused Dead End of pushing a "pro-transgender agenda" to children.

In that scene, the character Barney comes out and expresses relief at being able to live authentically. Musk responded: "This is not ok," and later added: “Cancel Netflix for the health of your kids.”

He also indicated that he himself had already canceled Netflix, at least in spirit.

Here are which cartoons are actively being cited by most of the debates:

  • Dead End: Paranormal Park: This is the main focus. A clip where Barney is a trans teen.
  • Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City: This show got criticism for having a trans character (Banoffee) and a nonbinary character (Raisin Cane), plus two dads.
  • The Baby-Sitters Club: Mentioned by Musk and others in the campaign as another example of kids/family-friendly content with LGBTQ+ themes they object to.
  • CoComelon Lane: Also being brought up in some posts accusing Netflix of pushing LGBTQ themes for very young children.

Other shows that do have trans/nonbinary/LGBTQ+ themes, but had lesser impact, include:

  • Transformers: EarthSpark: Has nonbinary character Nightshade who declares pronouns they/them, stating "he or she just doesn’t fit who I am," to which Optimus Prime agrees.
  • Ridley Jones: Has nonbinary characters.
  • She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, City of Ghosts, Twelve Forever: Often cited in broader discussions of LGBTQ or trans representation.

Transgender, or trans for short, refers to people whose gender identity doesn’t align with the sex they were assigned at birth. For example, someone might be born biologically male but identify and live as a woman, or be born female and live as a man. This is not about clothing or behavior but about deeply felt identity.

Trans people often take steps, social, medical, or both, just to live in a way that matches who they truly are.

Nonbinary describes people who don’t see themselves strictly as male or female. Some may feel like a mix of both, others may feel like neither, and many simply live outside the traditional gender categories.

Nonbinary individuals often use pronouns like they/them instead of he or she, and their presence challenges the long-standing cultural assumption that everyone must fit neatly into one of two genders.

When people talk about “LGBTQ+ themes,” they’re referring to stories or characters that reflect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or other diverse identities. These themes can appear as same-sex couples, trans or nonbinary characters, or broader messages about acceptance and inclusivity.

Supporters argue this representation is important, especially for younger audiences, because it shows that different kinds of people and families exist in the real world, and that they too deserve understanding and belonging.

The controversy arises because not everyone agrees with that approach, especially when such themes appear in children’s programming.

To some, it feels like positive education about diversity.

To others, it feels like ideology being introduced at too young an age, or content that clashes with their values.

This tension plays out in larger culture wars, where companies like Netflix become flashpoints for debates over identity, representation, and what’s considered appropriate for kids.

Hamish Steele, facing backlash and harassment, responded on BlueSky that much of the narrative is “lies and slander,” and said Netflix is not actively promoting Dead End at present. He also reported receiving homophobic and antisemitic messages, and stated he may temporarily step back from engagement.

Meanwhile, Zach Barack, the voice actor for Barney (the trans character), defended the show, saying that it has had a positive impact on many families, even saving lives.

Due to popular anti-trans accounts like Libs of TikTok have been promoting this Cancel Netflix movement, and with Elon Musk amplifying the message, Netflix’s stock did dip about 2%.

This clash touches on deeper questions: the boundaries of content for children, the role of parent oversight, free expression in art, and how influential figures may mobilize media boycotts for ideological ends.

Musk’s call also carries personal resonance: he has a transgender-identified daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, who has publicly rejected his criticism of her, and in the past he has made disparaging remarks about trans identities.

Ultimately, whether or not this moment produces a lasting cultural shift or merely a media ripple, Netflix is vast, and it will take much more than social media theatrics show to literally cancel Netflix.

What's certain however, Musk clearly hopes his megaphone can tip the scale.
