When it comes to the internet, nothing is truly secure.
The only thing that separates a legitimate user from an imposter is the user's knowledge of login credentials. Unfortunately, this time, someone managed to compromise one of OpenAI’s official X (formerly Twitter) accounts, using it to launch a cryptocurrency scam.
A fraudulent post surfaced on the official @OpenAINewsroom account, featuring a fake promotion of $OPENAI tokens.
The post included a link that directed users to a phishing site designed to mimic OpenAI’s real website, tricking unsuspecting users into falling for the scam.

The site had a button that read "CLAIM $OPENAI," which was intended to trick users into linking their cryptocurrency accounts.
The message stated that all OpenAI users would be able to get a share of the token to provide early access to the upcoming beta versions.
Before the post was deleted, it remained visible for almost an hour, and could have been seen by many of its followers and non-followers.
The post had its comment section, which made it more difficult to recognize the fraud for the users.
Such scams as this one commonly attempt to collect user credentials and, consequently, give the attackers access to the users’ cryptocurrency portfolios.
Connecting wallets to the fake websites can lead to loss of funds or exposure of personal information.

Following OpenAI's rise in face, especially after releasing ChatGPT among others, the company has since become a victim of cybercrimes where scams have attempted to impersonate the company's officials on various platforms.
These incidents are not new to X and other organizations of others have also fallen prey to cybercriminals.
In particular, compromised accounts were often used to trick victims into various fake cryptocurrency investment schemes such as pump and dump.
Sam Altman’s OpenAI has acknowledged the breach and is investigating the incident.
The company urged users to remain cautious and avoid interacting with suspicious posts or links that claim to offer cryptocurrency giveaways.
