Let alone exploring the whole 70% part of the Earth that is covered in water, humans have yet to totally explore the land part.
From mountains to the mangroves, forests and many parts of the Earth's coastlines, and also the two polars. While humans have mapped the Earth, thanks to technology and satellites, humans have yet to know many remote places.
And this was experienced by Rene Compean.
Compean was hiking alone, and he soon realized that he was lost.
Through his dying phone, he sent a text to his friend, with a picture of his dirt-covered legs dangling above a canyon. His friend who received the message, quickly notified the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, that assembled a rescue team.
Unfortunately for the rescue team, Compean didn't have his phone's location setting turned on.
The team started searching for Compean near the Mt. Waterman area.
But knowing that the area is too large, and would render the team unable to get to Compean in time due to his unknown location, the team was worried since it was getting dark and cold. The team searched throughout the night without success and a new team was assembled first thing this morning to continue the search.
Fortunately, the team sent the photo out to the media and on social media platforms hoping that someone would recognize the area, "and call us to help."
This was when Benjamin Kuo spotted it.
Luckily, "SAR Team members were able to communicate with a member of the community who is also an avid hiker in the Angeles National Forest," the sheriff's department statement said. "He shared information he knew about the area pictured in our posts."
"I've got a very weird hobby which is, I love taking a look at photos and figuring out where they're taken," Kuo told KNBC.
Kuo said he was able to zero in on the background behind Compean's shoes in the photo, and pinpoint the near-exact location where he was stranded.
Kuo then shared the coordinates of the location Compean would probably be.
"You don't think that sitting behind a computer and looking at a picture and saying, 'Oh, it looks like that might be where he is,' would lead to a person being rescued," Kuo said. "I was hoping I didn't send them on a wild goose chase, and then they'd get mad at me."
Kuo really told everything he knew about the place, and it turned out that Compean was found within only three-quarters of a mile of the coordinates Kuo suggested.
"This was a good clue and it was worth investigation," Sargent John Gilbert of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department Crescenta Valley Station told the outlet. "So that's when we asked our Air Rescue 5 to go and check out that area and see if they saw anything, lo and behold we were able to find him."
Compean was found near the Twin Peaks East and Triplet Rocks.
After Compean was rescued, he made contact with Kuo virtually for the first time, and said that he was grateful of his rescuer.
"I crazy appreciate what you did… I really don't know if I could make it there another day. It was just so cold," he said, according to KNBC.
Compean said that he is an avid hiker. But the forest and its many trees, as well as some areas that were partially burned and destroyed made him to lost his way.
Compean was missing for a day, before he was airlifted to safety.
