Generative AI Can Help Create 'Auto-Generated Summaries' On YouTube, Said Google

The AI world was quite dull before generative AIs took it by storm.

Generative AI tools, made a hype following the introduction of ChatGPT by OpenAI, are powerful, but tend to hallucinate and make things up.

They can go rogue as well.

But there is one particular feature that most people would agree, and that is generative AIs' ability to condense down long text into shorter ones.

And this time, Google is experimenting with that on YouTube, to automatically generate summaries of videos.

According to Google in a support article:

"We’re starting to test AI auto-generated summaries on YouTube, so that it’s easier for you to read a quick summary about a video and decide whether it’s the right fit for you. To begin with, you may see these summaries on watch and search pages. While we hope these summaries are helpful and give you a quick overview of what a video is about, they do not replace video descriptions (which are written by creators!)."

As a user-facing feature, YouTube suggests that the feature is different from video descriptions, which are written by creators.

The auto-generated summary feature uses AI to understand the content within, and make the summaries ready, even before a viewer plays a video.

It's meant to give a brief overview of a video’s contents without replacing its existing description written by a human.

Summaries of videos can appear on YouTube’s watch and search pages.

"This experiment is running only with a limited number of videos ([English] only) and viewers, so if you see the feature, let us know what you think by sending feedback!" said Google.

In the tech world, is extremely common to see companies experiment in some new things, and on YouTube, it's not at all uncommon to see new features come and go.

That's the nature of a constantly changing service, and it's the only way to evolve and advance a step further beyond rivals.

And in the hype of generative AIs, Google has made big breakthroughs in the field of generative AIs with Bard.

So, it's only a matter of time before Google starts introducing YouTube its own AI.

The functionality Google is testing here, is part of Google's larger focus on generative AI
