Google Search Can Notify Users If It Doesn't Find Anything That Matches Users' Queries

Confused Google

Every second throughout the minute, hour, day, weeks, months and years, Google scans the web for information in order to populate its database.

Despite having the largest database of web pages, information, their keywords and links, Google Search isn't perfect. There are times that the search engine couldn't really answer users' queries with the most relevant results.

Google wants to make its search engine smarter, but the company also wants to tell users how accuracy of its search engine has come a long way.

To do that, the company is rolling out a way for its search engine to show a message to notify users when it's not confident in its search results.

Users can still get results and try to find the answers they want. Google's message here is simply meant to tell users that "Google hasn’t been able to find anything that matches your search particularly well. "

According to the company in a blog post:

"While you can still go through the results to see for yourself if they’re helpful, the message is a signal that we probably haven’t found what you’re looking for. When possible, the feature will also provide some alternative searches as well as tips on how you could reformulate your query to better find the information you seek."
Confused Google

Google has came a long way since it was originally called "Backrub" when it was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were both Ph.D students at Stanford University in California

Fast forward, Google is already the titan of the web.

But even with its increasing amount of computing power and with the massive data to churn from the web, Google Search may not show the best of results.

"It’s definitely not what we want to see happen, and we try to prevent it in a number of ways," said Google.

"For example, if you spell something wrong, we have systems to detect those misspellings and provide proper spelling predictions, so you can find web pages and information that match the words you were really searching for. We also continue to make improvements to our underlying language understanding systems in Search, so even if you don’t phrase something exactly as it’s written online, we can still understand the words and concepts in a way that makes sure you can find a good match."

But these systems aren't perfect. Or, the information is simply not available on the web.

And this is what the notification message is for.

This feature shouldn’t show up too often, promised Google, saying that "there’s usually something helpful we can find!"
