Instagram has introduced a new capability that permits users to manually adjust the arrangement of posts appearing on their profile grids.
For more than a decade the display order had remained fixed in reverse chronological sequence with the most recent content positioned at the top. This longstanding setup reflected the original design of the app but left many users without a simple way to highlight specific photos videos or carousels once they had been published.
The update addresses that limitation by handing control directly to account holders allowing them to decide the visual flow visitors encounter when viewing a profile.
Accessing the tool requires only a few taps within the latest version of the mobile app.
A user navigates to their own profile taps and holds any post until a menu appears and then selects the reorder grid option.
The interface shifts into an editable state where each item can be dragged to a new location across the grid layout. An undo function stays available throughout the session so any placement can be reversed before finalizing.
Once adjustments are complete the new order saves automatically and becomes visible immediately to anyone who visits the profile.

The process works for individual photos videos and multi image carousels though certain elements such as pinned posts continue to occupy their dedicated spots at the top.Importantly the rearrangement applies exclusively to the profile grid itself.
It leaves untouched the sequence in which posts appear in followers home feeds or explore sections. Likes comments timestamps and all other metadata attached to each piece of content remain unchanged. Reels maintain their separate display behavior and the feature does not extend to content that has been tagged by others or stored in private collections.
As of the initial rollout the option is available only on mobile devices and reaches users progressively as the app update propagates through the global user base.
Many individuals had requested greater flexibility with their profile presentation over the years.
Creators in particular have noted that the ability to reposition older material without deleting or reposting helps sustain a cohesive aesthetic even as new content is added regularly. Personal accounts can now emphasize favorite moments or group related images together for a more intentional look.
At the same time, some observers have expressed reservations pointing out that the original chronological default provided a straightforward record of activity and questioning whether widespread customization might reduce consistency across profiles.
Early discussions around the announcement have also surfaced broader frustrations with the platform including concerns about account moderation and support processes though those comments often stand apart from direct opinions on the grid feature.
The practical effects will vary depending on how different users choose to implement the change.
For some it offers a low effort method to refresh an existing profile without starting over. Others may experiment briefly before returning to the familiar newest first arrangement. Instagram has indicated that the update aligns with ongoing efforts to give people more say in how their presence appears though no further details have been shared about potential expansions or refinements.
Overall the introduction of manual grid reordering marks a modest but notable shift in how profiles function on the app.
It does not alter the core mechanics of posting or discovery but it does expand the range of choices available for personalizing one small corner of the Instagram experience.
Users who have waited for this level of control may find it a welcome addition while those content with the previous system can continue as before.
