The 'Remove' Feature Allows Facebook Messenger Users To Delete Unwanted Sent Messages

Humans aren't perfect, and we must admit that we make mistakes from time to time.

Some of us may have accidentally sent a meme to our boss, or even a greeting to an ex. Mistakes happen, but on messaging platforms, mistakes like these can make us regret for hours afterwards.

"Have you ever accidentally sent a message to the wrong group of friends, mistyped something, or simply wanted to remove a message in a chat? You’re not the only one!" said Facebook.

WhatsApp is already having a feature which allows users to delete sent messages. And this particular feature arrives to Facebook Messenger.

According to Facebook:

"Simply tap on the message you want to remove and select the option to “Remove for Everyone”. The removed message will be replaced by text alerting everyone in the conversation the message was removed. You will have up to 10 minutes to remove a message after it is sent."

"If you want to remove a message just for yourself, you can still do that anytime by selecting “Remove for You”. When you choose this option, the message will be removed for you, but not for anybody else in the chat."

This feature is similar to what CEO Mark Zuckerberg infamously had when he deleted messages he sent.

At that time, multiple sources noted that they received messages from Zuckerberg, to then saw the messages mysteriously disappeared while their own messages remained.

When questioned, Facebook confirmed Zuckerberg’s messages expired over time, citing increased security purposes.

Facebook Messenger unsend feature

"After Sony Pictures' emails were hacked in 2014 we made a number of changes to protect our executives' communications," said Facebook in a statement at the time.

"These included limiting the retention period for Mark's messages in Messenger. We did so in full compliance with our legal obligations to preserve messages."

After users realized that Zuckerberg could do that, but the average users couldn't, they called Facebook to give them a similar feature.

Later, the social giant announced that it would build an "unsend" feature for all users eventually. Facebook reportedly said it would not have Zuckerberg delete his messages anymore until the feature was publicly launched.

Almost a year later, in 2019, the company finally released this feature, and said that it is based on Zuckerberg's ability, but with "some improvements to provide broader functionality to people using Messenger."

The unsent "delete" feature is made available to Messenger on desktop, as well as on iOS and Android.
