YouTube Adds Three New Features To Make Its App A More Proper Podcast Platform

YouTube

YouTube has rolled out several new podcast features designed exclusively for Premium subscribers.

As the Google-owned platform continues to expand its audio offerings, the features are meant to appeal listeners who prefer video or background playback. These updates focus on smarter discovery personalized recommendations and more convenient playback options for people who consume podcasts while commuting exercising or handling daily tasks.

With podcasts on YouTube already reaching over one billion monthly active users and Premium subscribers logging more than 800 million hours of podcast listening in April 2026 alone the company is clearly investing in ways to make the experience more engaging and efficient.

In a blog post, YouTube said that:

"Podcasts on YouTube are a true global phenomenon. With more than 1 billion monthly active viewers, we know how important podcasts are to YouTube users everywhere. That's why we’re always working to make the podcast experience on YouTube as seamless as possible."

The first feature is 'On the Go' mode which optimizes the interface for active and multitasking situations.

Now available to users on Android and coming to iOS in the coming months this mode provides simplified controls during background playback including quick options to skip forward or back and to jump directly to the next episode. It also displays a static image so users can easily track progress while listening in audio only format.

Tailored for real world scenarios such as commuting exercising or running errands On the Go mode emphasizes convenience and control making it far easier to stay engaged with favorite podcasts talk shows or true crime series even when visual attention is limited.

The second key addition is 'Auto Speed' which acts as a smart playback feature that dynamically adjusts speed throughout an episode to create a more efficient listening experience.

Instead of applying one fixed speed to the entire podcast the system intelligently speeds up slower spoken sections while easing back during information dense moments to preserve clarity and understanding. The result is a streamlined session that shortens overall listening time without forcing manual tweaks or risking missed details.

By focusing on natural variations in host pacing Auto Speed addresses a frequent pain point and gives busy listeners a practical way to consume more content while maintaining full comprehension.

And lastly, the third feature extends the popular Ask Music capability into podcast recommendations.

Available in select countries, the tool lets users request suggestions simply by describing what they want whether that is podcasts in a specific genre content to match their current mood or shows similar to ones they already enjoy. Rather than leaving listeners to scroll through endless feeds Ask Music analyzes preferences and listening history to deliver tailored recommendations that feel relevant and personal.

This emphasis on intelligent discovery helps reduce the time spent searching and makes it easier for users to uncover new favorites without frustration.

All three new features are currently available to Premium users on Android devices with support for iOS expected to arrive in the coming months.

These enhancements build on existing Premium benefits such as background play and adjustable speeds while signaling YouTube's broader effort to compete more effectively in the podcast market.

By focusing on both discovery and playback convenience the updates position the platform as a more versatile option for audio content fans who value flexibility and personalization.
