Email was first developed by Ray Tomlinson, an employee at BBN, who also made the decision to use the "@" symbol to separate the user name from the computer name.
The symbol that will become an icon of the digital age. In an interview in 1990, Tomlinson said that he chose the symbol because it made sense, and was not used anywhere else.
