'Avengers: Endgame' Presale Tickets Crashing Websites

02/04/2019

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the Avengers: Endgame is the 22nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Within an hour of its tickets going on sale, the huge amount of demand for the tickets quickly overwhelm websites. AMC's website and app were down completely while Fandango "paused" its line for AMC orders, as it attempted to hold and break the traffic down.

This online queue for tickets was then hit with outrageous wait times - upwards of 40 minutes in some cases to over an hour for others.

The sudden surge also took down Marvel fandom websites, Regal Cinemas and Atom Tickets apps.

This kind of ticket demand isn't unexpected.

Before the incident happened, Fandango anticipated the traffic surge by creating virtual "waiting rooms", just like how it did in the past for big releases. But still, this didn't stop the incoming traffic from severing its servers.

Avengers: Endgame broke records, even before being released in theaters

Fandango reported later in the day that 'Avengers: Endgame' broke the site's first day presale record, beating the previous record held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens within "the first six hours of presales."

It also broke the records through Atom in the first 60 minutes of advance sales than 'Avengers: Infinity War' did.

“Avengers: Endgame sales have exceeded all expectations ... to become Fandango’s top-selling title in its first 24 hours of sales, and it accomplished that feat in only 6 hours,” Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis said in a press release.

“We’ve never seen anything like this – it’s truly a groundbreaking accomplishment – as fans simply cannot wait to see how this epic saga comes to a close.”

With theaters' sites and apps went offline, fans were left with hour-long waits, resulting to issues to spread to social media.

Marvel fans were not pleased, with "Endgame" related hashtags taking up four of the top spots in Twitter's trending topics in the U.S., including one devoted specifically to Fandango, as fans voiced their displeasure.

It took AMC and Fandango a few hours to completely run smoothly.

Website-crashing like this, as well as record-smashing advance ticket sales indicate incredible anticipation for Endgame.

For Marvel (and its parent company Disney), this anticipation equates to money.

Putting all the superheroes left (with Brie Larson as Captain Marvel) to fight against Thanos, Endgame has been billed as the culmination of more than a decade’s worth of story lines, and the answer to all the questions raised in the shocking final act of 'Avengers: Infinity War' that killed half the universe's population.

The entire cinematic universe has pulled in over $18 billion worldwide, with the Infinity War film generated over $2 billion alone.

Endgame here, aims for an even bigger number.
