As a way for Facebook to bring internet access to remote and more developing countries, Facebook confirmed rumors that their engineers are working on developing a fleet of solar-powered drones that can beam internet access down to people in many places that aren't connected to the internet yet. This was revealed when the social network introduces its Connectivity Lab, a team of people, including experts from NASA, which are working on new aerospace and communications technologies with the aim of expanding global internet access.
According to the announcement from Internet.org - the organization that Facebook, Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm, Samsung, and others joined last year to help spread internet access - the drones would fly autonomously for months at a time at an altitude of 20,000 meters (roughly 65,000 feet).
the team includes personnel from UK-based startup, Ascenta, who previously worked on the Breitling Orbiter and prototypes of the Zephyr, one of the longest-flying solar powered drone.
