Google Fonts (or previously: Google Web Fonts) is Google's interactive directory that host font libraries, free for anyone to use. Many of its fonts are released un der the SIL Open Font License 1.1 while others are under Apache License.
The Google Font API provides an easy to use method to embed any font in the directory on users' web page.
When first launched, Fonts only had 14 open-sourced fonts. The company has been working with a number of font designers to produce a varied collection of high-quality open-source fonts for the Font directory. With the Google Font API, users can embed their web pages with any fonts as easy as using "the standard set of so-called 'web-safe' fonts that come installed on most computers."
