Google Play Services, The First Android App With More Than 10 Billion Installs

03/08/2020

Google Play is something Android users need to have to make their devices more useful. And Google Play services, is the backbone for all Android devices with Google services.

Used by APIs and services that are preinstalled and relied on Google, Google Play services has become the first ever to have exceeded the 10 billion installs milestone on the Google Play Store.

This Google’s service had reached 5 billion downloads in 2017. At that time, the number of active Android devices was around 2 billion.

In 2020, the number of devices has reached more than 2.5 billion.

And by reaching more than 10 billion downloads means that the app has been used by more than the world’s entire population at the moment.

On its app page on Google Play Store:

Google Play services is used to update Google apps and apps from Google Play.

This component provides core functionality like authentication to your Google services, synchronized contacts, access to all the latest user privacy settings, and higher quality, lower-powered location based services.

Google Play services also enhances your app experience. It speeds up offline searches, provides more immersive maps, and improves gaming experiences.

Apps may not work if you uninstall Google Play services.

Considering that Google Play Services is simply a suite of APIs, services, and more that are required for almost all Android smartphones and apps to work, the milestone shouldn't really come as a surprise.

Google Play services is already tightly tied to the Android operating system in general.

Google Play services' app hits that total, is also because it has been preinstalled on every Android phone since 2012.

What's more, reset devices often inflate the number as well.
