The 'Iconic' Afternoon Tea Between The Tallest And Shortest Women: Between Love And 'Transvestigating'

The internet may be rife with trolls and haters, but amidst the sea of negativity, there are those who celebrate the beauty of diversity and the richness of life.

Humanity is full of contrasts, and it’s this variety that makes our world so vibrant.

In a delightful nod to such diversity, Guinness World Records—famed for documenting extraordinary achievements—hosted an "iconic" afternoon tea in London, England.

At the time, the world’s tallest woman, Rumeysa Gelgi, met up with the world’s shortest woman, Jyoti Amge, to mark the 20th annual Guinness World Records Day.

And the internet is clearly overjoyed.

On a post on its website, GWR wrote that:

It doesn’t happen every day that the tallest and shortest in the world meet – and, when such different realities collide, it’s always magical.

On the occasion of the 20th annual Guinness World Records Day, Jyoti Amge and Rumeysa Gelgi (respectively the shortest and tallest women living) celebrated their first meeting with a lush afternoon tea at The Savoy Hotel, in the heart of London.

The two women, who embody some of the most loved and iconic titles at Guinness World Records, were looking forward to spending a lavish "girls' day out" together.

They got to know each other during a relaxing morning, enjoying delicious tea and pastries.

Gelgi, Amge

Gelgi is known worldwide as the tallest woman living.

Standing tall at a staggering 215.16 centimeters, Gelgi is an advocate, researcher and web developer from Turkey.

Not only that she is the tallest living woman as confirmed by GWR, because she also holds the titles of the largest hands for a female, the longest fingers for a female, the longest ears for a female, and the longest back for a female.

According to GWR, Gelgi was first named the tallest teenager living female at the age of 17.

Her gigantism is caused by Weaver syndrome, a rare condition which causes rapid growth among other abnormalities.

Because of her condition, she usually uses a wheelchair for her daily mobility, and if she chooses to walk, she can but with a walker.

Gelgi, Amge

Meanwhile, Jyoti Amge was first named the shortest teenager in 2009 at 15, before being confirmed as the shortest woman in 2011.

With the title she proudly held for more than a decade, at the height of just 62.8 centimeters, Amge who played Ma Petite in American Horror Story, has a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia.

When the Indian actress met Gelgi, she was clearly astonished.

Despite the whopping height gap of 152.36 centimeters, the two became fast friends.

The traditional English tea that took place at the luxury The Savoy hotel, quickly bonded the life experiences of the two unique individuals.

"Meeting Jyoti for the first time was wonderful," Gelgi said about the encounter.

"It was difficult for us to make eye contact at times due to our height difference, but it was great."

"She's the most gorgeous lady. I was waiting to meet her for a long time."

Gelgi, Amge

"I’m used to looking up and seeing people taller than me but I was so happy to look up today and see the world’s tallest woman," said Amge, describing her first meeting with Gelgi.

"I’m delighted that I’ve met Rumeysa, she is so good-natured, and I felt very comfortable talking to her."

"We are aiming to inspire people with visible differences to find the courage to show themselves. I want to make people see that being different is okay."

Gelgi also said that she just realized how she and Amge “have a lot in common.”

"We both love self-care, makeup, doing our nails and jewelry," she added.

Guinness World Record editor-in-chief Craig Glenday said:

"The Guinness World Records icons are those record holders who truly embody the spirit of GWR. They come from all areas, from science and technology, sports and the arts and media, and are also those dedicated record holders who we see year after year."

On one side, internet users see the moment gracefully. On the other side, trolls also start their trolling work.

Rumeysa Gelgi’s viral appearance in London, which caused a spike in people searching for her name, also caused a spike in searches for the term "Is Rumeysa Gelgi trans," as well as a similar increase in searches for “Is Rumeysa trans” on TikTok.

While those people may wonder, and start their own opinions, Gelgi, a cisgender, experiences an extreme disorder that made her that way.

In fact, her condition is only the 27th case ever to be diagnosed.

The rising trend in Google searches for her name and the buzz on social media highlight how women who defy outdated, stereotypical notions of "femininity" often become the focus of intense public scrutiny.

This phenomenon has fueled the rise of a term called "transvestigating"—a blend of "transgender" and "investigating."

It refers to baseless conspiracy theories that accuse individuals, particularly women, of secretly being transgender and concealing their "true" gender identity.

Gelgi is not the only distinctive woman to face such transvestigation. A similar case involves the Algerian Olympian Imane Khelif, who earned gold at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.
