Netflix blocked in Indonesia

The streaming service Netflix is being blocked in Indonesia, a country which represents a major chunk of Netflix's potential global market. Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world behind China, India, and the United States.

The block was initiated by Telkom, Indonesia's state-run and the largest telecommunications provider. Telkom objected to some of the content available on Netflix (such as adult and violent content) and said that Netflix didn't have a permit to operate as a content provider in the country.

This underscores the challenges Netflix should face in securing its ambition to be a global TV network, as Netflix CEO Reed Hastings described.

Netflix is one of the internet services that is struggling to pass Indonesia's regulators, following Reddit, Vimeo, Imgur and a number of other website.
