Since the first major celebrity sex tape found its way onto the internet in the mid-1990s, when grainy footage of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee on a private boat trip began circulating among fans and then spreading far beyond their control, the public has developed an almost ritual fascination with leaked intimate moments.
That early scandal set a template that later waves of viral tapes followed, from Paris Hilton’s hotel-room footage to Kim Kardashian’s own widely shared video, each one turning private acts into public currency, sparking debates about consent, fame, and the internet’s appetite for the forbidden.
What once required physical copies or obscure websites now travels at the speed of a single share, reaching millions before the people involved can even respond.
The internet consumes them one after another. Now, another name joins the growing list of victims.
Sheryl Cherono, better known to millions as Sheryl Gabriella, was born on January 7, 2001, in Sotik, Kericho County in Kenya, and raised in Bomet by her single mother Anita Kirui after her parents separated when she was about five.
Her mother supported the family through domestic work and selling second-hand clothes, instilling a fierce work ethic that Sheryl has often credited in her content.
She developed a love for drama in school, even defying a ban on Form Four students to compete in a festival and win best actress.
After high school she earned a diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication from the Multimedia University of Kenya, then scraped by as a waitress in Juja earning around 12,000 shillings a month and taking hotel hosting gigs that paid about 700 shillings a day while raising her son Adrian Sebastian, born in 2020.
By 2021 she had begun posting cover songs and lifestyle videos on YouTube.
A chance meeting with content creator Kabugi in 2021 shifted everything; the two started collaborating, and in 2022 her comedy skits tied to the Shembeteng language challenge exploded.
She built a multi-platform presence as a TikToker, actress, musician, and entrepreneur, releasing tracks, partnering with brands, streaming lives that could pull in tens of thousands of shillings a day in gifts, and even building a bungalow for her mother.
Her content mixed motherhood, comedy, music covers, and raw personal stories, turning her into one of Kenya’s more recognizable digital faces.
That carefully constructed public life collided with private material in early July 2026.
Around July 11 an explicit video surfaced and spread rapidly across TikTok, X, Telegram channels, and other platforms.
In the footage Sheryl is seen setting up a camera, moving onto a bed, undressing, and engaging in sexual acts.
Some circulating versions and descriptions focus on her pleasuring herself; others link the material to Tyler Mbaya, the actor known as Baha from the long-running Machachari series.
The clips racked up millions of views within days.
Sheryl initially stayed quiet, then posted a short video in which the hurt was visible, asking for privacy.
On July 12 she stated clearly that her private intimate recordings had been shared without her consent, asked people to delete the files from their devices and accounts, and said she was working with authorities and legal counsel to pursue those responsible for the leak and distribution.
The reaction was immediate and divided.
Nairobi County Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria publicly called the material an act of clout-chasing that promoted immorality and demanded an investigation, arguing that such behaviour should not become normal.
Online speculation pointed fingers at relationship drama involving her former partner Steve Nice and influencer Hannah Benta, who was photographed vacationing with him in Thailand.
Hannah denied any role, stating she did not leak anything and that snatching someone was not her style.
Other theory suggest that she was creating a custom content to a high-level TikTok gifter named Hamisi (described as one of the biggest gifters), who allegedly apromised her a large "Lion" gift, reportedly worth over 60,000 shillings. Allegedly, his wife found the video and then leaked it.
Meanwhile Sheryl tried to pivot, posting that the sudden Ronaldo-level views made it a perfect time for brands to advertise on her pages.
By July 22 the Digital Content Creators Association of Kenya had stepped in.
The Digital Content Creators Association of Kenya (DCCAK) is the first legally recognized and nationally mandated professional body for digital content creators in Kenya.
It is also described as a pioneering organization of its kind on the African continent.
The non-profit founded in 2024 aims to organize, advocate for, professionalize, and empower Kenyan digital content creators who work on platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, blogs, podcasts, Facebook, and streaming services.
Its mission is to organize, empower, and advocate for Kenya’s digital creators through structured programs in training, legal protection, partnerships, and policy engagement.
DCCAK described the circulating material as inappropriate and damaging to the reputation of the entire Kenyan digital content industry, especially with the 2027 general election approaching.
The association gave Sheryl and Baha seven days to issue public apologies across all their platforms or face possible referral to the Communications Authority of Kenya and other regulators, plus requests to platforms for content removal or even permanent account deactivation.
Sheryl complied with a formal Instagram statement:
"To my fans, partners, colleagues and the general public, first and foremost, I would like to sincerely apologise to anyone who has been affected by the video."
The episode sits inside a larger pattern of non-consensual intimate image leaks that have hit Kenyan creators and public figures.
Sheryl had already been in the news earlier that month for weeping on a livestream after claiming she was scammed out of a 12-million-shilling prize in a Burkina Faso voting contest that demanded daily payments from participants.
The leak layered fresh questions of consent, privacy, and the blurred line between private life and public brand onto an already complicated personal story.
Whether the material was recorded for private use, shared with a partner, or created for paid exclusive access remains unconfirmed, but one thing is certain: Sheryl’s own words frame it as non-consensual distribution.
The industry body, politicians, fans, and critics continue to argue over accountability while the clips keep circulating.
