Smartisan R1, The First Smartphone With 1TB Storage

15/05/2018

With smartphones becoming smarter and more powerful, the more things users can do with them. And since the internet is also becoming something in common for all people, users are generating more and more data.

For many people, they may not need an ever-increasing local storage, as most of their data can be stored in the cloud.

But for others who just like to store their data inside their phones, away from the internet, or for those users who just have a collection of games that are gigabytes each, a bigger storage is certainly a demand.

Chinese multinational technology company Smartisan has revealed its highend smartphone, called the R1.

The highest variant of this smartphone boasts a 1TB storage, something that even many highend laptops with SSDs don't have.

This is considered the first time in history that a smartphone is shipped with that much built-in storage.

In an era where notch is a common thing, the Smartisan also has a notch. But unlike Apple's iPhone X, the R1's notch is more similar to the Essential phones.

This makes it have a 6.17-inch pressure sensitive display with a 2242 x 1080 resolution, and an 18.7:9 aspect ratio.

The display reaches the top with a cut-out for the front-facing 24MP camera and a slit for the earpiece, all protected with Gorilla Glass 3.

This makes the phone to have an 84 percent screen-to-body ratio.

Inside, the R1 is shipped with a Snapdragon 845 processor, clocked at 2.8GHz. This is paired with an Adreno 630 GPU.

At the rear, the R1 has dual rear cameras: the primary sensor is a 12MP Sony IMX363 sensor with a f/1.8 aperture, 1.4 μm pixel size, 4-axis OIS, and dual PD extreme focus. And the second is a 20MP Sony IMX350 with a f/1.75 aperture, 1μm pixel size, and 6P lens.

Also at the rear that is covered with a 3D glass, this is where the R1 embeds its fingerprint scanner.

The R1 has support for Bluetooth 5.0, dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC+eSE, and has a USB-C port with Display Port 1.4. It also has dual SIM support (nano only) and global LTE band support. And powering them all, is the a 3600mAh battery that supports Quick Charge 4.

Since R1 is considered the first smartphone to boast such storage, the company believes that, along with the Snapdragon 845, users can benefit from its PC-level computing experience.

The phone runs Smartisan OS 6.66 that is based on Android. And when docked, the OS converts to an interface similar to that on an macOS-like home screen.

Smartisan ships the highest R1 variant (8GB RAM + 1TB storage) for a cost similar to the premium iPhone X 356GB from Apple. The product went on sale starting May 15th, 2018.
