Anthropic Makes 'Claude 3.5 Haiku' Available For The Public: Smarter, Pricier

Claude 3.5 Haiku

It was calm and quiet—until a war broke out.

Since OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT, sparking immense curiosity and demand, competitors have scrambled to create their own AI models to rival, or even surpass, ChatGPT. Among the top contenders, Anthropic has emerged as one of the elites.

And among its list of products, is the 'Claude 3.5 Haiku', which is at this time, its "fastest model, delivering advanced coding."

And this time, Anthropic is making the model available through its API, Amazon Bedrock, and Google Cloud's Vertex AI.

In a web page on Amazon's AWS:

"Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Haiku model is now available in Amazon Bedrock. Claude 3.5 Haiku is the next generation of Anthropic’s fastest model, combining rapid response times with improved reasoning capabilities, making it ideal for tasks that require both speed and intelligence. Claude 3.5 Haiku improves across every skill set and surpasses even Claude 3 Opus, the largest model in Anthropic’s previous generation, on many intelligence benchmarks—including coding."

Anthropic added that Claude 3.5 Haiku is well suited for entry level user-facing products, like specialized sub-agent tasks, and generating personalized experiences from huge volumes of data, which include things like purchase history, pricing, or inventory data.

"Claude 3.5 Haiku can help efficiently process and categorize large volumes of unstructured data in finance, healthcare, research, and other industries. Claude 3.5 Haiku can also help with use cases such as fast and accurate code suggestions, highly interactive customer service chatbots that require rapid response times, e-commerce solutions, and educational platforms. The new Claude 3.5 Haiku is currently available as a text-only model with support for image inputs to follow."

One of Claude 3.5 Haiku strong points, is speed.

It's also smart.

"Haiku is fast and particularly strong at coding. It outperforms state-of-the-art models—including GPT-4o—on SWE-bench Verified, which measures how models solve real software issues," said Anthropic in a post on X.

"During final testing, Haiku surpassed Claude 3 Opus, our previous flagship model, on many benchmarks," it said in another post.

But all those capabilities come with a price.

And that price isn't actually cheap, because Anthropic also announced a price hike.

Before, Anthropic suggested that Claude 3.5 Haiku would cost the same as Claude 3 Haiku, its predecessor.

But this time, Anthropic said that "we’ve increased pricing for Claude 3.5 Haiku to reflect its increase in intelligence."

Pricing for Claude 3.5 Haiku starts at $1 per million input tokens (~750,000 words) and $5 per million output tokens. That’s versus 25 cents per million input tokens and $1.25 per million output tokens for Claude 3 Haiku.

This is an immense 4x price increase for a "smarter" AI that is the only available model that cannot analyze images yet.

Despite Claude 3.5 Haiku can output longer chunks of text than Claude 3 Haiku, and the model has a more recent knowledge cutoff (meaning that it can reference more recent events), it's quite rare to see an AI developer to significantly rise the price of a model in a series.
